KZN Hawks Boss Lesetja Senona Told To Vacate Office as Probe Into His Conduct Deepens

February 2, 2026
in Africa

The head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Major-General Lesetja Senona, has been instructed to temporarily leave his office while an investigation into his conduct is underway. Despite this development, Senona remains employed by the Hawks and has not been formally suspended, according to confirmations attributed to the unit.

The decision to ask Senona to vacate his workspace was made by the Hawks’ top management in light of recent allegations against him. These allegations have raised concerns about his ability to effectively carry out his duties as the head of the elite crime-fighting unit.

The Hawks, also known as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, is a specialized unit within the South African Police Service (SAPS) that focuses on investigating and combating serious and organized crime. As the head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Senona is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all investigations in the province.

The decision to ask Senona to temporarily leave his office is not a suspension, but rather a precautionary measure to ensure the integrity of ongoing investigations. This move also demonstrates the Hawks’ commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability within the unit.

In a statement, Major-General Senona expressed his full cooperation with the investigation and his commitment to clearing his name. He also assured the public that the operations of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal will not be affected by this development and that the unit will continue to carry out its mandate of fighting crime.

The decision to ask Senona to temporarily leave his office has been met with mixed reactions. Some have praised the Hawks for taking swift action in response to the allegations, while others have criticized the move as being premature and unfair.

However, it is important to note that the Hawks have a duty to investigate any allegations of misconduct against their members, regardless of their rank or position. This is crucial in maintaining the public’s trust in the unit and ensuring that justice is served.

The Hawks have also assured the public that the investigation will be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, and that Senona will have the opportunity to present his side of the story. This is a testament to the unit’s commitment to upholding the principles of natural justice and due process.

It is also worth noting that this is not the first time that the Hawks have taken action against one of their own. In the past, the unit has not hesitated to suspend or dismiss members who have been found guilty of misconduct or corruption. This demonstrates the Hawks’ zero-tolerance approach towards any form of wrongdoing within their ranks.

In conclusion, the decision to ask Major-General Lesetja Senona to temporarily leave his office while an investigation into his conduct is underway is a necessary step in upholding the integrity and professionalism of the Hawks. It also sends a strong message that no one is above the law, and that the unit is committed to rooting out any form of corruption or misconduct within its ranks.

The Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal remain fully operational and committed to their mandate of fighting crime and ensuring the safety and security of all South Africans. Let us trust in the process and allow the investigation to run its course, and let justice prevail.
