How to drink sake: A beginner’s guide

in Asia

Have you heard the siren call of sake? This traditional Japanese drink has been gaining popularity all over the world, and it’s not hard to see why. With its smooth and delicate flavor, sake has become the go-to drink for many people looking for something new and exciting. However, for those who are unfamiliar with this beverage, it can seem quite complicated. That’s why I have compiled a brief beginner’s guide to help you navigate the world of sake and become a speedy sake connoisseur.

First things first, let’s start with the basics. Sake, also known as nihonshu, is a fermented rice beverage that has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. It is made from rice, water, and koji (a type of mold that helps with the fermentation process). Unlike wine, which is made from grapes, sake is made from rice, making it a unique and distinct drink.

One of the most important things to know about sake is the different types and grades. Just like wine, sake comes in a variety of styles and qualities. The most common types of sake are junmai, honjozo, ginjo, and daiginjo. Junmai is the most basic type of sake, made with only rice, water, and koji. Honjozo is similar to junmai, but it has a small amount of distilled alcohol added to it. Ginjo and daiginjo are considered premium sake, made with higher quality rice and a more refined brewing process.

Now, let’s talk about how to enjoy sake. Unlike wine, sake can be enjoyed at different temperatures. It can be served chilled, at room temperature, warm, or hot. The temperature at which you drink sake can greatly affect its flavor. For example, chilled sake tends to have a crisp and refreshing taste, while warm sake has a richer and fuller flavor. It’s all about personal preference, so don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you.

When it comes to pairing sake with food, there are a few general rules to keep in mind. Sake pairs well with a variety of dishes, but it is best to avoid spicy or heavily seasoned foods, as they can overpower the delicate flavors of sake. Sake also goes well with seafood, sushi, and other Japanese dishes. However, don’t be afraid to try it with other cuisines as well. You might be surprised at how well sake can complement different flavors.

Now that you know the basics of sake, it’s time to learn how to properly serve and drink it. Sake is traditionally served in a small ceramic or glass cup called a choko, or in a larger carafe called a tokkuri. When pouring sake, it is customary to pour for others before pouring for yourself. It is also considered polite to hold the cup with both hands when receiving sake from someone else.

When drinking sake, it is important to take small sips and savor the flavor. Unlike other alcoholic beverages, sake is not meant to be chugged or gulped down. Take your time and appreciate the subtle nuances of the drink. And don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations or advice from the sake sommelier or server. They are there to help you find the perfect sake for your taste.

Lastly, let’s talk about etiquette. In Japanese culture, it is considered impolite to pour your own sake. Instead, it is customary to pour for others and have them pour for you. It is also important to never let your cup become empty, as it is a sign that you are not enjoying the sake. If you are finished drinking, simply leave your cup partially full to indicate that you do not want any more.

In conclusion, sake may seem complicated at first, but with this beginner’s guide, you are now equipped to navigate the world of sake like a pro. Remember to try different types and temperatures, pair it with different foods, and most importantly, enjoy it in good company. So next time you hear the siren call of sake, don’t hesitate to answer and embark on a delicious and exciting journey. Kampai! (Cheers!)
