More pools don’t guarantee higher child swimming rates in London

February 2, 2026
in Europe

London is a city known for its diverse culture, rich history, and iconic landmarks. But did you know that it is also home to a large number of swimming pools? With over 100 public swimming pools spread across the city, London offers plenty of opportunities for its residents to take a dip and cool off during the hot summer months. However, a recent study has revealed that the number of swimming pools in a borough does not necessarily correspond to the number of children regularly swimming in that area.

The study, conducted by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, found that despite having the highest number of swimming pools in London, the borough did not have the highest rate of children regularly swimming. This may come as a surprise to many, as one would assume that more pools would mean more children swimming. However, the reality is quite different.

According to the study, the borough with the highest rate of children regularly swimming was the London Borough of Wandsworth, closely followed by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Both these boroughs have a significantly lower number of swimming pools compared to Richmond upon Thames. This raises the question – why are children in these boroughs swimming more despite having fewer pools?

One of the main reasons could be the accessibility and affordability of swimming facilities. While Richmond upon Thames may have a higher number of swimming pools, the cost of using these facilities may be a deterrent for families with lower incomes. On the other hand, Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham offer a variety of affordable options for children to swim, such as discounted rates for residents and free swimming lessons for low-income families.

Another factor that may contribute to the higher rates of child swimming in these boroughs is the availability of swimming programs and initiatives. The London Borough of Wandsworth, for instance, has a successful swimming program in place that offers free swimming lessons to all primary school children. This not only encourages children to learn how to swim but also provides them with a safe and supervised environment to do so.

Moreover, the study also highlighted the importance of parental involvement in promoting regular swimming among children. Parents play a crucial role in encouraging their children to take up swimming as a regular activity. In Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham, parents are actively involved in their children’s swimming lessons, which helps to instill a love for swimming in them from a young age.

The study also shed light on the need for more awareness and education about the benefits of swimming. Many parents may not be aware of the numerous physical and mental health benefits that swimming offers for children. By promoting the advantages of swimming, more parents may be encouraged to enroll their children in swimming lessons and make it a regular activity.

In conclusion, the number of swimming pools in a borough does not necessarily guarantee higher rates of children regularly swimming. Factors such as accessibility, affordability, availability of programs, and parental involvement play a significant role in promoting regular swimming among children. It is essential for boroughs to focus on these aspects to ensure that more children have the opportunity to learn how to swim and reap the benefits of this life-saving skill. So, let’s not just rely on the number of swimming pools, but instead, work towards creating a culture of swimming in all London boroughs.
