Dem Rep. Smith: We Focus Too Much on Identity Politics, Treat Trump Voters as Evil, Stupid, Trump’s Policies Are Harmful, Authoritarian

On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “The Beat,” Representative Adam Smith of Washington state gave his perspective on the current state of the Democratic Party and the message they need to send to the American people.

Smith, who is the Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to evolve and acknowledge their mistakes in order to regain the trust and support of the American people.

“We understand you weren’t thrilled with the Democratic Party. We have to change. We have to get better. We have to legitimately address people’s concerns,” Smith stated.

In the wake of the 2016 election, many Democrats have been grappling with how to move forward and regain their footing in a political landscape that has drastically changed. But Smith believes that in order to move forward, the Democratic Party must first recognize and address their past mistakes.

Smith pointed out that the party’s focus on identity politics and the treatment of Trump voters as “evil” and “stupid” has not only alienated a large portion of the population, but it has also hindered the party’s ability to effectively communicate their message and policies.

“We focus too much on identity politics and I think we treat Trump voters as if they’re some evil, horrible people. Well, they’re not. They’re our fellow citizens. They may be wrong, but we need to persuade them, not just insult them,” Smith emphasized.

His words serve as a reminder for the party to not let their differences divide them, but rather to find common ground and work towards a shared goal.

Smith also highlighted the harmful effects of President Trump’s policies on the American people, stating that they are “harmful” and “authoritarian.” He stressed the importance of the Democratic Party to present a strong and united opposition to these policies in order to protect the rights and well-being of all Americans.

But in order to effectively do so, Smith believes that the party must first focus on rebuilding their relationship with the American people and regaining their trust.

As the Democratic Party moves forward, it is important for them to remember that their ultimate goal is to serve the American people and work towards a better future for all. This requires acknowledging past mistakes, evolving and adapting to the changing political landscape, and finding ways to unite rather than divide.

In the words of Representative Adam Smith, “We have to change. We have to get better. We have to legitimately address people’s concerns.” Only then can the Democratic Party truly move forward and create positive change for the country.
