Business confidence slumps ahead of Spring Statement

March 2, 2026
in Asia

Business confidence in the UK took a hit in February as directors expressed their growing frustration with the state of the economy. According to the latest business confidence survey conducted by the Institute of Directors (IoD), business leaders are feeling exasperated with the current economic climate and the high level of employment taxes that are hindering their ability to hire more workers.

The IoD’s survey revealed that many business directors are feeling discouraged by the slow pace of economic growth in the UK. Despite the government’s efforts to boost the economy, businesses are still facing numerous challenges that are impeding their growth and success. One of the major concerns highlighted by the survey is the high level of employment taxes, which are making it difficult for businesses to expand their workforce.

The IoD’s Director General, Jonathan Geldart, stated that the current economic conditions are causing a great deal of frustration among business leaders. He emphasized that the high level of employment taxes is a major barrier for businesses looking to create more jobs and contribute to the growth of the economy. Geldart also added that the government needs to address this issue urgently in order to boost business confidence and encourage investment in the UK.

The IoD’s survey also revealed that business leaders are feeling increasingly pessimistic about the future of the UK economy. This is a worrying trend, as business confidence is a key driver of economic growth. When businesses are confident, they are more likely to invest, expand and create jobs, which in turn leads to a stronger economy. However, with the current state of affairs, it is not surprising that business leaders are feeling uncertain and hesitant about the future.

In addition to the high level of employment taxes, the IoD’s survey also highlighted other concerns that are weighing on business confidence. These include the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, rising costs of doing business, and the lack of skilled workers. All of these factors are contributing to a sense of frustration and disillusionment among business leaders.

The IoD has called on the government to take immediate action to address these issues and restore business confidence in the UK. In particular, the organization has urged the government to reduce employment taxes and provide more support for businesses to invest in training and upskilling their workforce. The IoD also stressed the importance of a smooth and orderly Brexit, as uncertainty around the UK’s departure from the EU is a major concern for businesses.

Despite the current challenges, the IoD remains optimistic about the future of the UK economy. The organization believes that with the right policies and support from the government, businesses can overcome these obstacles and continue to thrive. The IoD is committed to working closely with the government to find solutions that will boost business confidence and drive economic growth.

In conclusion, the latest business confidence survey by the IoD has highlighted the frustration and concerns of business leaders in the UK. The high level of employment taxes and other challenges are hindering businesses from reaching their full potential and contributing to the growth of the economy. However, with the right measures and support from the government, business confidence can be restored and the UK economy can continue to prosper. It is crucial for the government to take action now and address these issues in order to create a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
