The gender pay gap will take 30 years to close, report says

February 16, 2026
in Asia

The gender pay gap has been a hot-topic issue for the past few decades. Despite significant strides towards achieving equal pay between men and women, it seems that the gap is far from closing. A recent report by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) reveals that at the current rate of progress, it will take another three decades to achieve gender parity in wages. This is not only a sobering fact, but it also serves as a wake-up call for all of us to take action and work towards accelerating the pace of progress.

According to the TUC analysis, the gender pay gap will not be closed until the year 2056 if we continue on our current track. This means that our daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters will still be facing this inequality in their workplaces. The report also shows that women earn on average 85% of what men earn. This is a significant difference that cannot be ignored.

It is disheartening to see that despite decades of efforts, the pay gap still persists. It is a stark reminder that there is still a long way to go in achieving true gender equality. However, instead of being discouraged, we should use this report as a catalyst to push for more action and change.

The first step towards closing the gender pay gap is acknowledging its existence. Sadly, there are still people who deny its existence or downplay its significance. We cannot afford to continue living in denial. We must accept that the gender pay gap is very real and it affects millions of women around the world.

The next step is to identify the factors that contribute to the gender pay gap. One of the main reasons for this gap is the undervaluation of female-dominated professions. Society often places less value on jobs that are traditionally held by women, such as caring and administrative roles. This undervaluation leads to lower wages and contributes to the gender pay gap.

Another factor is the lack of flexible working arrangements that accommodate the needs of working mothers. Many women are forced to choose between their career and their family, which can limit their earning potential. Providing more flexible working options and affordable childcare can greatly help in bridging the gender pay gap.

It is also essential to recognize that the pay gap is not just a women’s issue but a societal issue. We all have a role to play in breaking down the barriers that prevent women from earning equal pay. Employers, policymakers, and individuals must work together to create a fair and equal workplace for all.

One way to do this is by promoting transparency in pay. Employers should publicly disclose their pay scales to ensure that there are no discrepancies based on gender or other factors. This will also hold companies accountable for any pay disparities and encourage them to take the necessary steps to close the gap.

On an individual level, we must all educate ourselves and others about the gender pay gap. This includes understanding our own worth and advocating for fair pay in our workplaces. We must also support and uplift our fellow female colleagues and push for more women in leadership positions.

The TUC report also highlights the importance of collective bargaining and union representation in closing the gender pay gap. Unions have played a crucial role in negotiating equal pay for women in many industries. It is essential to protect and strengthen unions to continue this fight for equal pay.

As the TUC General Secretary, Frances O’Grady, stated, “We won’t close the gender pay gap until we have a labour market that works better for women.” We must continue to push for policies and measures that promote gender equality in the workplace.

Let us not forget that closing the gender pay gap is not just about achieving economic equality; it is about creating a society where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their gender. We must strive towards a future where our daughters and granddaughters do not have to face the same struggles and battles that their mothers and grandmothers faced.

In conclusion, the TUC report serves as a reminder that there is still much work to be done in achieving gender equality in wages. However, it is also a wake-up call for all of us to take action and strive towards closing the gap. With collective efforts, we can create a fair and equal workplace for all, and hopefully, we will see the gender pay gap finally close in our lifetime.
