WATCH: Olympic Curler Blasts ICE: ‘What’s Happening in Minnesota Is Wrong’

February 11, 2026
in Americas

The Winter Olympics have always been a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and represent their country on a global stage. However, in recent years, it has also become a platform for athletes to voice their opinions on political issues. The latest in this trend is a U.S. Olympic curler who has used her time in the spotlight to speak out against President Trump’s policies.

In a recent interview, Olympic curler Nina Roth expressed her concerns about the current state of affairs in the United States. She specifically addressed the controversial policies of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which has been under fire for its treatment of immigrants and their families.

Roth, who hails from Minnesota, spoke passionately about the issue, stating, “What’s happening in Minnesota is wrong. Families are being torn apart, and it’s heartbreaking to see. As an athlete, I have a platform to speak out, and I want to use it to bring attention to this issue.”

Her comments have sparked a debate among sports fans and political commentators alike. While some have praised her for using her platform to raise awareness, others have criticized her for bringing politics into the Olympics.

But Roth is not the first American athlete to use the Winter Olympics as a platform to speak out against President Trump’s policies. In fact, she joins a long list of athletes who have done the same in recent years.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, figure skater Adam Rippon made headlines for his criticism of Vice President Mike Pence’s stance on LGBTQ rights. He also refused to meet with the Vice President, stating that he did not want to “endorse” his policies.

Similarly, at the 2018 Paralympic Games, cross-country skier Oksana Masters, who was born in Ukraine and raised in the United States, spoke out against the travel ban imposed by the Trump administration. She stated that the ban was “unfair” and went against the values of the Olympics.

These athletes have received both praise and backlash for their actions. Some argue that the Olympics should be a politics-free zone, while others believe that athletes have a responsibility to use their platform to speak out against injustice.

But regardless of one’s stance on the issue, it cannot be denied that these athletes are making a statement and bringing attention to important issues. The Olympics, with its global audience, provides a unique opportunity for athletes to use their voice and make a difference.

In the case of Nina Roth, her comments have shed light on the controversial policies of ICE and the impact they have on families. As an athlete, she has a unique perspective on the issue, having grown up in Minnesota, a state with a large immigrant population.

Roth’s comments have also sparked a conversation about the role of athletes in society. They are not just entertainers, but also role models and influencers. By speaking out, they are using their platform for a greater purpose, and that is commendable.

In conclusion, the Winter Olympics have always been a platform for athletes to showcase their talents and represent their country. But in recent years, it has also become a platform for athletes to speak out against political issues. Nina Roth, along with other American athletes, has used this opportunity to bring attention to important issues and spark a conversation. As we continue to watch the Winter Olympics, let us not forget the power of athletes to make a positive impact on society.
