Ahead of Super Bowl, Texas Rep Seeks Stronger Legal Protections for Border Patrol Tactical Teams

February 8, 2026
in Americas

In the wake of recent mass shootings and terror threats, the need for enhanced security measures has become more pressing than ever. As the country prepares for one of its biggest events, the Super Bowl, Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) has proposed a new bill that aims to strengthen the legal protections for elite Border Patrol Tactical Groups (BORTAC) deployed to provide security at public events or assist with law enforcement responses to mass casualty events.

The Homeland Threat Response Act, as proposed by Congressman Gonzales, seeks to provide BORTAC agents with the necessary legal safeguards to carry out their duties effectively. This bill comes at a crucial time, as hundreds of U.S. Department of Homeland Security personnel have been deployed in advance of the Super Bowl, which is set to take place this Sunday.

The BORTAC teams are highly trained and specialized units within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. They are responsible for providing tactical support in high-risk situations, such as drug smuggling, human trafficking, and responding to potential terrorist threats. These agents are often called upon to assist local law enforcement agencies in times of crisis, and their presence can be crucial in ensuring the safety of the public.

However, despite their critical role in maintaining national security, BORTAC agents often face legal challenges and uncertainties while carrying out their duties. This is where the Homeland Threat Response Act comes into play. The bill aims to provide these agents with stronger legal protections, allowing them to perform their duties without the fear of facing legal repercussions for their actions.

Congressman Gonzales, a former U.S. Navy cryptologist and member of the House Armed Services Committee, understands the importance of having a strong and efficient security force in place. He believes that the BORTAC teams are an essential part of our nation’s security infrastructure and must be given the necessary support and protection to carry out their duties effectively.

The proposed bill has received widespread support from law enforcement agencies and security experts. They believe that the enhanced legal protections will not only benefit the BORTAC agents but also the public at large. With the Super Bowl just around the corner, the need for heightened security measures is evident, and the Homeland Threat Response Act couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

In addition to providing legal safeguards for BORTAC agents, the bill also seeks to increase their training and resources. This will enable them to stay updated with the latest tactics and technologies and better equip them to handle any potential threats that may arise.

As we gear up for the Super Bowl, it is reassuring to know that the BORTAC teams will have the necessary support and protections in place to keep us safe. The proposed bill by Congressman Gonzales is a testament to his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the American people. It is a step in the right direction towards creating a more secure and resilient nation.

In conclusion, the Homeland Threat Response Act proposed by Congressman Tony Gonzales is a much-needed measure that will provide stronger legal protections for the elite BORTAC teams. As we come together to celebrate the Super Bowl, let us also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of these agents who work tirelessly to keep us safe. With the passage of this bill, we can rest assured that our nation’s security is in capable hands.
