Potentially 200+ Killed in Suspected ISIS-Linked Attacks in Western Nigeria

February 6, 2026
in Americas

Three separate attacks this week have left a devastating impact on the people of Kwara state in western Nigeria. The death toll has risen to at least 162 and is still counting, with many of the victims being Muslims who were brutally slaughtered by an Islamic State offshoot for refusing to accept their extremist ideology.

The first attack took place on Monday in the town of Afon, where armed gunmen stormed a mosque during evening prayers and opened fire on the worshippers. The attack left 36 people dead and several others injured. The next day, a similar attack occurred in the town of Yebu, where gunmen targeted a market and killed 57 people, including women and children. The third attack took place on Wednesday in the town of Agbaji, where 69 people were killed in a brutal massacre.

These series of attacks have left the entire nation in shock and mourning. The people of Kwara state are in a state of fear and uncertainty as they struggle to come to terms with the senseless violence that has claimed the lives of their loved ones. The attacks have also raised concerns about the rise of extremism in the region and the threat it poses to the peace and stability of the country.

The perpetrators of these heinous crimes are believed to be members of an Islamic State offshoot, who have been spreading their extremist ideology and carrying out attacks in the region. This is not the first time that the group has targeted innocent civilians in Nigeria. In recent years, they have been responsible for numerous attacks on mosques, churches, and other public places, causing the deaths of hundreds of people.

The Nigerian government has condemned the attacks and has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and has promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the people. The government has also deployed security forces to the affected areas to maintain law and order and prevent any further attacks.

The international community has also condemned the attacks and offered their support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism. The United Nations has called for an immediate end to the violence and urged all parties to work towards peace and reconciliation. The African Union has also expressed its solidarity with Nigeria and has called for a united effort to combat extremism in the region.

In the face of such tragedy, it is heartwarming to see the people of Kwara state coming together to support each other. The local communities have opened their doors to those who have lost their homes and loved ones, providing them with shelter and food. The people have also organized peaceful protests to demand justice for the victims and to call for an end to the violence.

The attacks in Kwara state serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat of extremism in the world. It is a wake-up call for all nations to unite and take strong action against terrorism. We must stand together and reject all forms of extremism and violence, regardless of race, religion, or ideology.

The loss of innocent lives is always a tragedy, and the people of Kwara state deserve our support and solidarity during this difficult time. Let us honor the victims by promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding in our communities. Let us stand united against the forces of hate and division, and work towards a world where such senseless violence is no longer a reality.

In conclusion, the recent attacks in Kwara state have left a deep scar on the hearts of the people. But in the midst of this tragedy, we have also seen the resilience and strength of the Nigerian people. Let us continue to stand together and support each other, and together, we can overcome any challenge. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and we hope that justice will be served and peace will prevail in the region.
