UK ETA + Europe’s ETIAS Explained: What Travellers Need to Know

February 1, 2026
in Travel

Are you planning a trip to the UK or Europe in 2026? If so, there are some changes coming your way that you need to be aware of. Starting in 2026, both the UK and Europe will be implementing new travel authorisations for visitors from outside the European Union. These authorisations are an important step in ensuring safe and secure travel, and they will be required before boarding a flight, train or boat to enter the UK or Europe.

For many years, visitors from around the world have enjoyed the ease of traveling to the UK and Europe without the need for a visa. However, as the global travel landscape continues to evolve, it has become necessary for the UK and Europe to implement new measures to maintain safe and efficient travel for all. So, if you’re wondering what these new travel authorisations are and how they will affect your trip, read on to find out more.

The UK will require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for all visitors from countries that are currently exempt from obtaining a visa. This includes citizens from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan, to name a few. The ETA will be a simple online application process that will be available for a small fee. Once approved, it will be linked to your passport and will be valid for multiple entries for a period of five years. This means that if you plan on visiting the UK multiple times within five years, you will not need to apply for an ETA every time.

Some of you may be wondering why the UK is implementing this new ETA requirement. Well, the main reason is to strengthen their borders and protect their citizens and visitors. The ETA will allow the UK to pre-screen visitors before they arrive, ensuring that those who enter the country do not pose a threat to its security. Additionally, it will also help to reduce the time and hassle of processing visas on arrival, making the entry process much smoother and faster for travellers.

On the other hand, visitors to Europe will need to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before their trip. Similar to the ETA, the ETIAS will be a quick and easy online application process, available for a small fee. It will be valid for a period of three years and will allow multiple entries into any of the 26 countries in the Schengen Area. These include popular destinations such as France, Italy, Spain, and Germany.

The ETIAS will also serve as a pre-screening tool for travelers to Europe. It will gather information on visitors’ identities, travel documents, and any potential security risks. This will help European countries to better manage and secure their borders, while also facilitating the smooth entry of travellers.

These new travel authorisations are a positive step towards maintaining the safety and security of travel to the UK and Europe. They will not only help to prevent any potential threats but also ensure a more efficient and streamlined entry process for visitors. So, if you’re planning a trip to the UK or Europe, make sure to add obtaining an ETA or ETIAS to your to-do list.

Furthermore, the ETA and ETIAS are also designed to promote tourism and boost the economy of these countries. With quicker and more secure entry into the UK and Europe, it will encourage more visitors to choose these destinations for their travels.

So, what does this mean for you as a traveller? Simply put, it just requires a bit of extra planning before your trip. Make sure to apply for your ETA or ETIAS well in advance of your travel date to avoid any last-minute delays or complications. And once you have it, you can embark on your trip with peace of mind, knowing that you have fulfilled all the necessary requirements.

In conclusion, the new travel authorisations for the UK and Europe in 2026 may seem like an inconvenience, but they are ultimately a positive change for the safety and security of travelers. So, if you’re planning a trip to these destinations, make sure to familiarize yourself with the ETA and ETIAS requirements and get your authorisation well in advance. We look forward to welcoming you to the UK and Europe in 2026 and beyond! Happy travels!
