Domestic abuse crimes fall but experts warn of systemic issues

January 30, 2026
in Europe

The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures have revealed that London has recorded higher arrest rates for domestic abuse-related offences compared to the national average. With 55.2 arrests per 100 domestic abuse-related offences, London has surpassed the overall rate of 44.2 across England and Wales. While this may seem like a concerning statistic, experts are cautiously optimistic as the data also shows a decline in domestic abuse crimes in the capital.

According to the ONS report, there were 75,932 domestic abuse-related offences recorded in London between April 2020 and March 2021, a decrease of 11% from the previous year. This is a significant drop, especially considering the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, which have been linked to an increase in domestic abuse cases globally. The fact that London has bucked this trend and recorded a decline in domestic abuse crimes is a positive indication of the efforts being made to address this issue in the city.

However, experts warn that this decline in domestic abuse crimes should not be viewed in isolation. While it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, it also highlights the systemic issues that continue to plague our society. Domestic abuse is a complex issue that stems from deep-rooted power imbalances, societal norms, and gender-based discrimination. It is not something that can be eradicated overnight, and therefore, the decline in domestic abuse crimes should not be seen as a victory but rather a small step towards a larger goal.

The ONS report also revealed that the majority of domestic abuse-related offences in London were recorded as “violence against the person without injury.” This indicates that many victims of domestic abuse may not be reporting the full extent of the abuse they have experienced. This could be due to fear, shame, or lack of awareness of available support services. It is crucial to address these barriers and improve access to support for victims of domestic abuse.

The decline in domestic abuse crimes in London can also be attributed to the efforts of various organizations and charities that provide support and assistance to victims. The government has also taken steps to address this issue, including the introduction of the Domestic Abuse Bill, which received Royal Assent in April 2021. This legislation aims to provide better protection and support to victims of domestic abuse and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

It is heartening to see that the efforts to tackle domestic abuse in London are yielding results. However, there is still a long way to go. We must continue to raise awareness about this issue and educate people about the signs of domestic abuse and the support available. It is also crucial to address the underlying causes of domestic abuse and work towards creating a society where everyone is treated with respect and equality.

The decline in domestic abuse crimes in London is undoubtedly a positive development, but it should not lead to complacency. We must continue to work towards a society where domestic abuse is not tolerated, and victims have the support they need to break free from their abusers. Let us use these latest figures as a motivation to keep pushing for change and creating a safer, more equal society for all.
