Maine Democrat Gov. Janet Mills Demands ICE Out, End to Deportations

January 26, 2026
in Americas

Maine’s Democrat governor, Janet Mills, has made a bold demand for a meeting with President Donald Trump, using the recent ICE shooting in Minnesota to further highlight her strong stance against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

The governor’s call for a meeting comes after a tragic incident in which a man was fatally shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis. The man, identified as Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez, was unarmed and was reportedly in the process of being deported when he was shot by ICE agents.

Governor Mills, who has been a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies, wasted no time in seizing this opportunity to reaffirm her position on the issue. In a statement released shortly after the shooting, Mills stated, “This is a senseless and tragic incident that once again highlights the need for real change in our immigration system. I demand an immediate end to ICE’s aggressive tactics and a meeting with President Trump to discuss how we can move forward in a more humane and compassionate manner.”

The governor’s strong words have sparked a heated debate on immigration and the role of ICE in enforcing Trump’s strict policies. While some have praised Mills for her courage and determination in standing up to the president, others have criticized her for using a tragic event to further her political agenda.

However, one thing is clear – Governor Mills is determined to make her voice heard and is not backing down from her stance against ICE and their actions. In an interview with local news outlets, Mills reiterated, “I will not rest until ICE is out of Maine and the inhumane and unjust deportations come to an end. Our state values diversity and we will not stand for these types of actions.”

Mills’ call for a meeting with Trump is a bold move, but one that is necessary in order to address the current state of affairs. With the recent increase in ICE raids and arrests, the governor believes it is imperative to take action and demand change at the highest level.

The governor’s demand for a meeting with Trump has gained support from many individuals and organizations, who see this as a crucial step in addressing the issues surrounding immigration and ICE. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which has been working closely with Governor Mills in advocating for immigrant rights.

In a statement, the ACLU of Maine Executive Director, Alison Beyea, said, “Governor Mills’ call for a meeting with President Trump is a strong and necessary move. We stand with her in demanding an end to ICE’s reckless and inhumane practices and urge the president to take action to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.”

While the outcome of a potential meeting between Governor Mills and President Trump remains uncertain, one thing is certain – change is needed. The recent ICE shooting in Minnesota has once again shed light on the urgent need for immigration reform and the role of ICE in enforcing these policies.

In the face of adversity, Governor Mills has shown courage and determination in standing up for what she believes is right. Her demand for a meeting with Trump is a clear indication that she is not afraid to challenge the status quo and fight for the rights of those who are often marginalized and forgotten.

As the debate on immigration and ICE continues, it is important to remember the human element behind these policies. Governor Mills’ demand for a meeting serves as a reminder that behind every statistic and headline, there is an individual whose life and future are at stake.

In the words of Governor Mills, “We must come together to find a solution that respects human dignity and recognizes the contributions of immigrants to our communities. This will require difficult conversations, but it is a conversation that must be had if we want to create a better and more just future for all.”
