Democrat Rep. Shri Thanedar to Introduce Bill to ‘Abolish ICE’: ‘ICE Is Beyond Reform’

January 15, 2026
in Americas

In a bold move, Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar from Michigan has announced his intention to introduce a bill that would abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE. The decision has stirred up a lot of controversy and reignited the debate on the role and effectiveness of ICE in the country’s immigration policies.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart, Rep. Thanedar stated that the current state of ICE is “beyond reform” and that it is time to take a closer look at the agency’s actions and its impact on immigrants and their families. He emphasized that his bill aims to create a more humane and fair immigration system that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The announcement comes at a time when ICE has faced immense criticism for its aggressive tactics and controversial policies, including family separations at the border and the detention of children in overcrowded facilities. These actions have sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform, with many arguing that the agency has strayed far from its original mandate of protecting national security and public safety.

Rep. Thanedar’s bill proposes to dismantle ICE and replace it with a new agency that would focus on immigration enforcement while also prioritizing the well-being of immigrants. This would involve taking a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to immigration, rather than the harsh and often inhumane methods employed by ICE.

The move has received support from various human rights organizations and immigrant advocacy groups. They believe that the current immigration system is broken and needs to be reformed, with ICE being a major obstacle in achieving a fair and just system. They argue that the agency’s aggressive tactics and lack of accountability have resulted in widespread fear and trauma among immigrant communities.

Moreover, Rep. Thanedar’s bill also addresses concerns about the use of taxpayer money to fund ICE’s operations. Critics argue that the agency’s budget has increased significantly in recent years, and yet there is little evidence to show that it has effectively improved immigration enforcement. The proposed replacement agency would aim to use resources more efficiently and effectively, with a focus on promoting a more just and humane immigration system.

However, the bill is not without its detractors. Republican lawmakers and supporters of ICE argue that abolishing the agency would create a dangerous void in national security and immigration enforcement. They argue that without ICE, the country would be vulnerable to threats from illegal immigration and criminal activity.

But Rep. Thanedar remains firm in his stance, stating that his bill is not about open borders or weakening national security. Instead, it is about creating a more just and humane immigration system that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

The introduction of this bill by Rep. Thanedar has sparked a much-needed conversation about the role of ICE in our society. It has also highlighted the need for a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to immigration reform. While the outcome of the bill remains to be seen, it has certainly ignited a much-needed dialogue on an issue that affects millions of people in the United States.

In conclusion, Rep. Shri Thanedar’s decision to introduce a bill to abolish ICE is a bold and courageous move that aims to address the flaws in our current immigration system. It is a step towards creating a more just and humane society, where the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected. The bill has the potential to bring about meaningful change and set a precedent for a more compassionate and fair immigration policy in the future.
