Newsom: I Do Not Trust the Justice Department

November 3, 2025
in Americas

Governor Gavin Newsom of California made a bold statement on Sunday during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He expressed his lack of trust in the current Justice Department, led by President Donald Trump.

Newsom, a Democrat, did not shy away from expressing his concerns about the Justice Department’s actions under Trump’s administration. He stated, “I do not trust the Justice Department in its current state. There have been too many instances where the department has been used for political gain rather than its intended purpose of upholding justice.”

The governor’s concerns center around the recent controversy surrounding the department’s handling of the Mueller investigation. Newsom pointed out that Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the report, which cleared Trump of collusion with Russia, raises serious questions about the department’s independence and credibility.

Newsom also addressed the Trump administration’s immigration policies, particularly the ongoing family separations at the border. He stated, “The Justice Department has been complicit in the separation of families and the mistreatment of immigrant children. This is not the justice that our country stands for.”

The governor’s lack of trust in the Justice Department is not unfounded. Trump has repeatedly attacked the department and its leaders, including former FBI Director James Comey and former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. He has also placed pressure on Attorney General Barr to investigate his political opponents, often without evidence.

Newsom’s statement on “Meet the Press” sparked a heated debate, with some defending the president and his Justice Department, and others applauding the governor for speaking out. However, it is clear that Newsom’s concerns are rooted in the need for an independent and fair justice system that works for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

As governor of California, Newsom has made it a priority to defend the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background or legal status. He has stood against Trump’s discriminatory policies and has taken a strong stance on protecting immigrants and their families.

In light of his statement, Newsom has reiterated his commitment to holding the Justice Department accountable and to standing up for justice and fairness for all. He stated, “As governor, I will continue to do everything in my power to protect the rights and well-being of all Californians. And I will not back down in the face of political pressure or threats to our country’s justice system.”

It is refreshing to see a leader like Newsom taking a stand against political interference in our justice system. His words serve as a reminder that we must all remain vigilant in defending the independence of our institutions and ensuring that they serve the people rather than political agendas.

We commend Governor Newsom for his courage in speaking out and hope that his message will lead to necessary reforms and a justice system that we can all trust. As the nation looks towards the 2020 election, it is imperative that we elect leaders who will uphold the values of justice, fairness, and integrity that our country was built on.
