2 dead as global trend of growing Gen Z protests hits Morocco

in Africa

At least two people were killed by security forces in Morocco as youth-led protests spread across the country, state media reported Thursday. According to the official news agency, the protests were sparked by the death of a young fishmonger who was crushed in a garbage truck while trying to retrieve his confiscated fish.

The incident, which occurred in the northern city of Al Hoceima, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice. The young man, identified as Mouhcine Fikri, was reportedly trying to sell fish without a permit when authorities confiscated his goods and threw them into a garbage truck. Fikri, in an attempt to save his merchandise, was tragically crushed to death.

The news of Fikri’s death quickly spread through social media, with many Moroccans expressing their anger and frustration over the incident. This led to spontaneous protests in Al Hoceima and other cities across the country, with many young people taking to the streets to demand justice for Fikri and denounce police brutality.

As the protests gained momentum, clashes between demonstrators and security forces erupted, resulting in the death of two people and injuries to several others. The use of excessive force by the authorities has been condemned by human rights organizations, who have called for an independent investigation into the deaths.

The protests have also brought to light the long-standing grievances of the Moroccan youth, who have been facing high unemployment rates and a lack of opportunities for years. Many young people in the country feel marginalized and excluded from political and economic decision-making processes, leading to a sense of hopelessness and frustration.

The protests, which have been dubbed the “Hirak” movement, have been largely peaceful and have been led by young activists who are using social media to mobilize and organize. This youth-led movement has brought together people from all walks of life, including students, workers, and civil society organizations, in a united call for change.

The government has responded to the protests by promising a thorough investigation into Fikri’s death and holding those responsible accountable. In a statement, Prime Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani expressed his condolences to Fikri’s family and emphasized the government’s commitment to respecting human rights and the rule of law.

The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, has also called for an investigation into the incident and urged authorities to ensure that justice is served. In a televised address, the King stated that “no one is above the law” and that the government must address the underlying issues that have led to the protests.

The King’s words have been welcomed by the protesters, who see it as a positive step towards addressing their demands. The youth-led movement has also received support from international organizations, with the United Nations calling for restraint and respect for human rights in dealing with the protests.

The protests have now spread to other cities, including the capital Rabat, where thousands of people gathered to demand justice and accountability. The peaceful nature of the demonstrations has been praised by many, with some calling it a “model for peaceful activism.”

The Hirak movement has shed light on the need for meaningful reforms in Morocco, particularly in terms of addressing the grievances of the youth. The country has made significant progress in recent years, but there is still a long way to go in terms of creating equal opportunities and ensuring the protection of human rights.

The tragic death of Mouhcine Fikri has brought about a wave of change and unity in Morocco. The youth-led protests have shown that the young generation is determined to fight for their rights and demand a better future for themselves and their country. As the protests continue, it is important for all parties involved to engage in peaceful dialogue and work towards finding solutions to the underlying issues.
