Episode 162 – Navigating Tiny Roads and Big Adventures: UK Trip Report with Merry and Chris Paxton

In episode 162 of the UK Travel Planning Podcast, host Tracy had the pleasure of welcoming special guests Merry and Chris Paxton, all the way from Minnesota. The Paxtons shared their exciting adventures from their four-week road trip throughout the UK. As avid travelers, the couple explored the best of what this beautiful country has to offer, from stunning castle ruins and ancient stone circles to historic events and Roman ruins.

The Paxtons kicked off their journey in South Wales, known for its rugged coastline, picturesque villages, and of course, its majestic castles. Merry and Chris were in awe as they explored the ruins of Caerphilly Castle, one of the largest fortified medieval castles in Europe. With its towering walls and impressive defenses, it was a true marvel of medieval engineering. The couple also visited the stunning Tintern Abbey, a Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century. Surrounded by lush greenery and nestled by the river Wye, Tintern Abbey was a peaceful and serene spot for the Paxtons to soak in the history and beauty of the UK.

Their next stop was Cornwall, a region famed for its sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, and mystical legends. The Paxtons couldn’t resist visiting the world-famous Stonehenge, an awe-inspiring Neolithic monument shrouded in mystery and wonder. Despite the crowds, Merry and Chris were able to bask in the ancient atmosphere and appreciate the incredible feat of engineering that it took to create such a monument. The couple also explored the stunning coastline and quaint villages of Cornwall, getting a true taste of the laid-back and picturesque lifestyle of this region.

Dorset was the next destination on the Paxton’s list, and it did not disappoint. The couple couldn’t resist the allure of Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch formation that has become an iconic symbol of the UK. As they gazed out at the crystal-clear waters and sweeping coastal views, the Paxtons couldn’t believe the natural beauty that surrounded them. Merry and Chris also explored the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its fossils and stunning rock formations. From charming seaside towns to picturesque countryside, Dorset had it all.

Their trip coincided with a very special event – the 75th anniversary of VE Day, also known as Victory in Europe Day. The Paxtons were able to celebrate this momentous occasion in Plymouth, a city steeped in military history. They joined in the festivities and paid tribute to the brave soldiers who fought for freedom during World War II. It was a humbling and emotional experience for Merry and Chris, and they were grateful to have been a part of such a significant commemoration.

Last but certainly not least, the Paxtons dove into the rich history of the UK as they explored the city of Bath and its surrounding areas. From the ancient Roman Baths to the grandeur of the Royal Crescent, the couple was in awe of the stunning architecture and rich heritage of this city. They even had the opportunity to visit the ruins of a Roman villa in the nearby town of Dorchester, giving them a glimpse into the lives of ancient Romans.

As their four-week adventure came to an end, the Paxtons reflected on the memories they had made and the places they had seen. From the breathtaking scenery to the welcoming locals, the UK had stolen their hearts. The couple couldn’t recommend a road trip through the UK enough, as it allowed them to immerse themselves in the culture and history of this magnificent country.
