Uganda’s deadly garbage landfill survivors await justice 1 year on

August 8, 2025
in Africa

When the massive landfill in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, collapsed a year ago, it was a devastating event that shook the entire community. Zamhall Nansamba, a resident of the area, was one of the first to witness the tragedy. At first, she mistook the deafening noise for an airplane taking off, but soon realized it was something much more catastrophic.

In a matter of moments, screams and cries for help filled the air as the landfill gave way, burying everything and everyone in its path. It was a scene of chaos and despair, as families were torn apart and homes were destroyed. The once bustling and vibrant community was now reduced to rubble and debris.

But amidst the devastation and tragedy, there was also a glimmer of hope. The people of Kampala came together in a remarkable display of resilience and strength. They refused to let this disaster defeat them and instead, they rose up to rebuild their community.

The first step was to provide immediate aid and support to those affected by the collapse. The government, along with various NGOs and volunteers, worked tirelessly to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to the victims. It was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life coming together to help their fellow citizens in need.

But the rebuilding process didn’t stop there. The community also took it upon themselves to clean up the area and prevent any further damage. They organized clean-up drives and waste management programs to ensure that the landfill would not pose a threat again. This not only helped in restoring the area but also created a sense of ownership and responsibility among the residents.

The collapse of the landfill also brought to light the larger issue of waste management in Kampala. The city generates over 600 tons of waste every day, and the landfill was the only designated dumping ground. This incident served as a wake-up call for the government to address this issue and find sustainable solutions for waste management.

As a result, the government has now implemented stricter regulations for waste disposal and is actively promoting recycling and composting. This not only helps in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills but also creates job opportunities for the local community.

The collapse of the landfill was a tragic event, but it also brought about positive change. The people of Kampala have shown incredible resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They have come together to rebuild their community and have also taken steps towards a more sustainable and cleaner environment.

This incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of proper waste management and the need for everyone to play their part in keeping our planet clean. It is a lesson that we can all learn from and apply in our own lives.

Today, as we look back on the events of that fateful day, we are reminded of the strength and unity of the people of Kampala. They have shown that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and the power to overcome any challenge. The collapse of the landfill may have been a tragedy, but it has also brought about a positive change that will benefit the community for years to come.
