Zohran Mamdani Echoes Gov. Hochul: Ban ‘Assault Rifles’ Nationwide

July 31, 2025
in Americas

Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken advocate for stricter gun laws, has recently echoed the calls of New York Governor Kathy Hochul for a nationwide ban on “assault rifles”. In a recent interview, Mamdani expressed his support for the ban, calling it a crucial step towards creating a safer society.

Hochul, who became governor after the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, has made gun control a top priority in her administration. In her first press conference, she called for a ban on “assault weapons” in an effort to curb gun violence in the state. And now, Mamdani, a rising star in the Democratic Party, has joined her in this fight.

“Governor Hochul’s vision of stronger gun laws is something that I wholeheartedly support,” Mamdani said. “And a nationwide ban on assault rifles is a crucial part of that vision.”

But what exactly are “assault rifles” and why are they so controversial? To put it simply, an assault rifle is a military-style weapon that has the capability of firing multiple rounds in a short amount of time. These weapons are designed for combat and are not necessary for self-defense or recreational use.

In recent years, there has been a surge in mass shootings across the country, with many of them involving assault rifles. These senseless acts of violence have claimed the lives of innocent civilians, including children, and have left communities shattered. And while some argue that the issue lies with mental health, it cannot be denied that easy access to these weapons plays a significant role.

Mamdani, who represents the 36th Assembly District in Queens, has been a vocal advocate for stronger gun laws since he took office in January 2021. He has authored legislation that would ban the sale, possession, and manufacturing of assault weapons in New York State, and has also co-sponsored other gun control measures.

But Mamdani knows that the fight for stricter gun laws cannot be confined to one state alone. “Gun violence is a national crisis that requires a national solution,” he said. “We cannot allow these weapons of war to continue to be easily accessible to anyone who wants to cause harm.”

Critics of the ban argue that it goes against the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees the right to bear arms. However, Mamdani and others argue that this amendment was written in a time when muskets were the most advanced weapons available, and not military-style assault rifles.

Furthermore, a nationwide ban on assault rifles has already been implemented in countries like Australia and Canada, with positive results. In Australia, there has been a significant decline in mass shootings since the ban was put in place in 1996. And in Canada, the ban has been successful in reducing gun-related deaths and injuries.

Mamdani’s support for the ban has also been met with praise from gun control advocacy groups. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, called the move “a bold and necessary step towards creating a safer America.”

In addition to the ban, Mamdani also emphasized the need for stronger background checks and closing loopholes that allow individuals to purchase guns without proper screening. “We need to make sure that these weapons do not end up in the wrong hands,” he said. “And that means implementing comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases.”

Mamdani’s stance on the issue is commendable, as he continues to push for stricter gun laws despite facing backlash from the gun lobby. But he remains undeterred, knowing that this fight is a crucial one for the safety and well-being of all Americans.

In conclusion, Zohran Mamdani’s support for a nationwide ban on “assault rifles” is a testament to his dedication to creating a safer society. As he and Governor Hochul continue to advocate for stronger gun laws, it is our hope that the rest of the country will follow suit and take necessary steps to prevent further tragedies caused by these deadly weapons.
