Sudan’s ousted ruling party aligns with army in bid to regain power

July 26, 2025
in Africa

Sudan has been making headlines in recent years for its political turmoil and civil unrest. In 2019, the country’s long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in a popular uprising, marking a significant moment in Sudan’s history. The people rejoiced, hoping that this would be the beginning of a new era of democracy and freedom. However, it seems that the old regime is not ready to give up without a fight. The National Congress Party (NCP), which ruled under al-Bashir’s autocratic rule, is staging a political comeback – through the barrel of a gun.

The NCP, which was founded by al-Bashir in 1998, has been the dominant political force in Sudan for over two decades. During this time, the party has been accused of numerous human rights violations, corruption, and economic mismanagement. Under al-Bashir’s rule, Sudan was isolated from the international community, and its people suffered from poverty and oppression.

The 2019 uprising brought hope for change, and the Sudanese people were determined to see a new government that would represent their interests and bring much-needed reforms. However, the NCP, which was toppled along with al-Bashir, has been working behind the scenes to regain its power and influence. The party has been using its vast network and resources to manipulate the political landscape and undermine the transitional government.

One of the NCP’s tactics has been to exploit the country’s fragile security situation. In recent months, Sudan has been facing a surge in violence and instability, with clashes between different armed groups and attacks on civilians. The NCP has been accused of fueling these conflicts and providing support to rebel groups to destabilize the country. This strategy has not only hindered the progress of the transitional government but also caused immense suffering to the Sudanese people.

Moreover, the NCP has been actively trying to regain its political foothold by infiltrating the government and spreading its influence. The party has been using its members who are still in key positions in the government and the military to push its agenda and protect its interests. This has created a power struggle within the transitional government, hindering its ability to implement much-needed reforms and address the country’s challenges.

The NCP’s comeback has also been fueled by its control over the media and propaganda. The party has been using its media outlets to spread false information and discredit the transitional government. This has created confusion and mistrust among the people, making it easier for the NCP to gain support and sympathy.

The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Sudan and has expressed concerns about the NCP’s actions. The United Nations and other organizations have called for an end to the violence and urged the NCP to respect the will of the Sudanese people. The African Union has also been mediating between the transitional government and rebel groups to bring an end to the conflicts and find a peaceful resolution.

Despite the challenges, the transitional government has shown resilience and determination to move the country forward. Led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, the government has been working towards implementing democratic reforms, rebuilding the economy, and addressing the root causes of the conflicts in the country. However, the NCP’s actions have slowed down the progress and made it difficult for the government to achieve its goals.

It is crucial for the NCP to understand that its comeback through the use of violence and manipulation will only lead to more suffering for the Sudanese people. The country needs stability and unity to overcome its challenges and build a better future. The NCP must put the interests of the nation above its own and work towards reconciliation and peace.

In conclusion, the NCP’s attempt to stage a political comeback through the barrel of a gun is a concerning development in Sudan’s fragile political landscape. The party’s actions have hindered the progress of the transitional government and caused suffering to the Sudanese people. It is time for the NCP to let go of its grip on power and work towards a peaceful and democratic Sudan. The people of Sudan have already shown their determination for change, and they will not accept anything less. It is time for the NCP to listen to their voices and respect their will. Only then can Sudan truly move towards a brighter future.
