Freedom in Europe facing greatest threat since WWII: Macron

July 15, 2025
in Europe

President Emmanuel Macron has issued a warning that freedom in Europe is facing its greatest threat since World War II. During a speech on Sunday, Macron called for a significant increase in France’s defense spending in order to protect and preserve the values of freedom and democracy in Europe.

The French President’s statement comes at a time when Europe is facing numerous challenges, both internally and externally. From the rise of authoritarian regimes to the ongoing refugee crisis, the continent is grappling with issues that could potentially undermine the very foundation of its democracy.

In his speech, Macron emphasized the importance of defending the values that Europe stands for, stating that “we must never forget that freedom, democracy, and the rule of law are not given, they must be defended every day.” He also highlighted the need for a united and strong Europe, stating that “without a strong Europe, there is no sovereignty, no capacity to exist in the world of today.”

Macron’s call for an increase in defense spending is a crucial step towards strengthening Europe’s security and protecting its values. France currently spends around 1.8% of its GDP on defense, which is significantly lower than the 2% target set by NATO. Macron has now set a goal for France to reach the 2% mark by 2025, in line with other European countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom.

The French President’s call for increased defense spending has received both support and criticism. Some argue that the money could be better spent on other social and economic issues, while others see it as a necessary step to ensure Europe’s security and stability. However, Macron believes that a strong defense is essential for the protection of Europe’s freedom and democracy.

The threat to Europe’s freedom and democracy is not just external, but also internal. The rise of populist and nationalist movements across the continent poses a significant challenge to the values of tolerance, diversity, and inclusivity that Europe stands for. Macron has been a vocal critic of these movements and has called for a united front against them.

In his speech, Macron also addressed the issue of Brexit and its potential impact on Europe’s security. He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the United Kingdom, stating that “Brexit cannot and will not stop Europe.” He also called for a new partnership between the UK and the EU, one that would ensure the security and stability of both parties.

Macron’s warning and call for increased defense spending serve as a wake-up call for Europe to take action and protect its values. It is a reminder that freedom and democracy are not guaranteed, and they must be defended and preserved. The French President’s strong stance on this issue is a testament to his commitment to a united and strong Europe.

In conclusion, President Emmanuel Macron’s warning that freedom in Europe is under its greatest threat since World War II is a stark reminder of the challenges that the continent is facing. His call for a significant increase in defense spending is a crucial step towards safeguarding Europe’s values and security. It is now up to other European leaders to follow suit and work towards a stronger and more united Europe. As Macron stated, “Europe is not a choice, it is a necessity.”
