Germany summons China envoy as aircraft hit by laser over Red Sea

July 9, 2025
in Europe

Germany has summoned China’s ambassador to Berlin in response to a recent incident involving a Chinese ship aiming a laser at a German military aircraft during an EU mission in the Red Sea. This dangerous and reckless act has caused concern and raised questions about China’s behavior and intentions in the region.

The incident occurred on July 17th, when a German military aircraft was conducting a routine flyover as part of the European Union’s Operation Atalanta, which aims to combat piracy in the Red Sea. The aircraft was suddenly targeted by a laser from a Chinese ship, causing temporary blindness and endangering the safety of the crew.

In response to this alarming incident, Germany’s Foreign Ministry summoned China’s ambassador to Berlin, Mr. Wu Ken, to express their strong condemnation and demand an explanation for this unacceptable behavior. The German government has also called for an immediate investigation into the incident and has urged China to take responsibility for its actions.

This is not the first time that China has been involved in such provocative and dangerous actions. In 2018, a Chinese warship aimed a laser at a US military aircraft in the Pacific, causing similar concerns and tensions. These repeated incidents raise serious questions about China’s intentions and behavior in the international community.

The use of lasers against military aircraft is a violation of international law and poses a serious threat to the safety and security of all nations. It is a clear act of aggression and must not be tolerated. Germany, along with its EU partners, stands united in condemning this reckless behavior and will not hesitate to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of its military personnel.

The German government has also expressed its concern about the increasing presence of Chinese military vessels in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. This raises questions about China’s intentions in the region and its growing military ambitions. The EU has also raised concerns about China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to expand its influence and presence in the region through infrastructure projects.

This incident also highlights the need for stronger international cooperation and coordination in addressing such aggressive actions. The EU has called for a united response from all nations to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. It is crucial for all countries to respect international law and maintain peaceful relations with each other.

Germany and the EU have always maintained a positive and constructive relationship with China, and this incident should not overshadow the progress made in their bilateral relations. However, it is essential for China to understand that such actions will not be tolerated and will only harm its reputation and standing in the international community.

The German government has also expressed its concern for the safety of its military personnel and has taken necessary measures to ensure their protection. It is the responsibility of every nation to ensure the safety and security of its citizens, especially those serving in the military.

In conclusion, Germany and the EU have strongly condemned the incident involving a Chinese ship aiming a laser at a German military aircraft during an EU mission in the Red Sea. This reckless and dangerous act must not be tolerated, and China must be held accountable for its actions. It is crucial for all nations to respect international law and maintain peaceful relations with each other. The incident also highlights the need for stronger international cooperation in addressing such aggressive actions. Germany and the EU remain committed to maintaining a positive and constructive relationship with China, but such incidents must not be repeated in the future.
