Chinese Warship Accused of ‘Laser Attack’ Against German Reconnaissance Aircraft on Red Sea Houthi Mission

July 9, 2025
in Americas

Germany has accused a Chinese warship of carrying out a “laser attack” on a German reconnaissance aircraft while on a European Union military mission in the Red Sea. The incident, which occurred without warning or provocation, has raised concerns about China’s growing military presence in the region and its aggressive tactics.

According to reports, the German P-3C Orion aircraft was flying over the Red Sea on a mission to monitor the flow of weapons to Houthi rebels in Yemen when it was targeted by the Chinese warship. The laser beam, which was reportedly aimed at the aircraft’s cockpit, caused temporary blindness for the crew and forced them to abort their mission.

This unprovoked attack has sparked outrage among German officials, who have condemned China’s actions as a violation of international law and a threat to the safety of their military personnel. German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has called for an immediate explanation from China and has warned that such actions will not be tolerated.

The incident has also raised concerns about China’s growing military presence in the Red Sea, which is a strategically important region for global trade and security. China has been expanding its naval presence in the area, with the construction of a military base in Djibouti and the deployment of warships to protect its commercial interests.

This aggressive behavior by China is not new. In recent years, the country has been involved in several territorial disputes in the South China Sea and has been accused of using its military might to assert its dominance in the region. The laser attack on the German aircraft is just another example of China’s disregard for international norms and its willingness to use force to achieve its goals.

The European Union has also expressed its concern over the incident, with the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, calling for a de-escalation of tensions in the region. He has urged all parties to respect international law and to refrain from any actions that could lead to further escalation.

The Chinese government has denied any involvement in the laser attack and has dismissed the accusations as “groundless”. However, this is not the first time that China has been accused of using laser weapons against other countries. In 2018, the US military accused China of targeting its aircraft with high-powered lasers in Djibouti, causing minor injuries to two pilots.

The use of laser weapons is a serious violation of international law and poses a significant threat to the safety of military personnel. These weapons can cause permanent eye damage and can also disrupt the functioning of aircraft, putting the lives of pilots and crew at risk. It is imperative that such actions are condemned and that those responsible are held accountable.

The German government has called for an independent investigation into the incident and has demanded that China take responsibility for its actions. This is a necessary step to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future and to send a strong message to China that its aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.

The European Union, along with its member states, must also take a firm stance against China’s actions and work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the situation. It is important for the EU to stand united and to send a clear message to China that its actions will not be tolerated.

In conclusion, the laser attack on the German reconnaissance aircraft by a Chinese warship is a serious violation of international law and a threat to the safety of military personnel. It is imperative that China takes responsibility for its actions and that measures are taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. The European Union must also play a proactive role in finding a peaceful resolution to the situation and in ensuring that international norms are respected. It is only through a united and firm stance that we can prevent such aggressive actions and maintain peace and stability in the region.
