Ukraine rips Fox News for labeling Kyiv Russian city

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Criticizes Fox News for Mistakenly Labeling Kyiv as a Russian City

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has expressed strong criticism towards Fox News, one of the largest news broadcasters in the United States, for a recent on-screen caption that mistakenly labeled Kyiv as a Russian city. The error was made during a segment on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and has caused outrage among Ukrainian officials and citizens alike.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, it was stated that the incorrect labeling of Kyiv as a Russian city was not only a factual mistake, but a blatant disregard for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. The ministry also emphasized that this mistake goes against the long-standing and friendly relations between Ukraine and the United States.

“If this was a mistake rather than a deliberate act, we expect an immediate and clear apology from Fox News,” the statement read. “Ukraine and its capital city Kyiv have been independent and sovereign since 1991, and it is unacceptable for a major news outlet to make such a mistake.”

The mistake was made during an interview with former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who was discussing the recent phone call between President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The on-screen caption incorrectly identified Kyiv as “Kyiv, Russia” instead of “Kyiv, Ukraine.”

This error has sparked widespread criticism and backlash from Ukraine, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment and frustration. The hashtag “#KyivNotRussia” has been trending on Twitter, with Ukrainians and supporters of the country calling for Fox News to issue a formal apology and retraction of the mistake.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, also condemned the mistake in a tweet, stating that “Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, not Russia. This is an insult to the Ukrainian people and our long-standing partnership with the United States.”

The mistake made by Fox News is particularly concerning given the current tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The two countries have been in conflict since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, a peninsula in southern Ukraine. The situation remains tense, with ongoing clashes in eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian armed forces and Russian-backed separatists.

The incorrect labeling of Kyiv as a Russian city not only undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty but also disregards the ongoing struggle and sacrifices made by the Ukrainian people in defending their country’s independence. It is a clear sign of ignorance and insensitivity towards the country and its people.

It is also worth noting that this is not the first time Fox News has made such a mistake. In 2019, the network labeled Finland as part of Russia during a segment discussing the country’s healthcare system. Such careless errors can have serious consequences, as seen in the case of Ukraine, where it fuels propaganda and misinformation.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has called on Fox News to take immediate action to rectify the mistake and prevent similar errors from happening in the future. They have also urged other media outlets to exercise caution and responsibility when reporting on international affairs.

In conclusion, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has rightfully criticized Fox News for mistakenly labeling Kyiv as a Russian city. This error not only shows a lack of factual accuracy but also a disregard for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. It is time for media outlets to take responsibility for their reporting and avoid such careless mistakes that can have serious consequences. Kyiv is and will always be the capital of Ukraine, and Fox News must apologize and correct their mistake to show respect for the country and its people.
