EU won’t tolerate any threats to Bosnia’s territorial integrity: Kallas

April 10, 2025
in Europe

The European Union stands firm in its commitment to uphold Bosnia’s territorial integrity, as declared by its top diplomat on Tuesday. This statement comes in the midst of a deepening crisis brought about by attempts to break away from Bosnia’s unity by certain secessionist groups.

At the heart of the issue is the rejection of the authority of Bosnia’s central government by the Bosnian Serb-led Republika Srpska entity. This move is seen by many as a direct threat to the unity and territorial integrity of the country, which has been working towards national reconciliation and stability since the devastating war in the 1990s.

Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, addressed the situation by stating that “the European Union will not tolerate any threats to Bosnia’s territorial integrity.” She further emphasized that the EU fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a single unified state, and any attempts to undermine this will not be accepted.

This strong stance by the EU demonstrates its unwavering support for Bosnia’s sovereignty and unity, as well as its commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the region. As a major political, economic, and security partner, the EU is deeply invested in the success and progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Not only does the EU provide significant financial assistance and market access, but it also plays a crucial role in promoting reforms and advancing the country’s integration into the European Union. The EU’s enlargement strategy for the Western Balkans envisions a united and stable region, with Bosnia and Herzegovina as an integral part.

Therefore, any attempts to undermine Bosnia’s unity and stability are not only a threat to the country itself but also to the EU’s efforts towards regional integration and cooperation. The EU has been at the forefront of supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina’s efforts towards reconciliation, democracy, and economic development, and it will not allow these efforts to be undone by secessionist moves.

The EU firmly believes that the best way forward for Bosnia is through dialogue and cooperation, not division and fragmentation. It is imperative that all parties come together to find common ground and work towards a sustainable and inclusive future for the country. The EU will continue to support and facilitate this process, but any attempts to unilaterally challenge Bosnia’s territorial integrity will not be tolerated.

It is also crucial for all stakeholders, both within Bosnia and in the broader international community, to respect and adhere to the principles of international law and the Dayton Peace Accords that ended the war in the country. These agreements are the foundation of Bosnia’s system of governance and must be upheld to maintain stability and cohesion.

In conclusion, the European Union’s resolute stance on protecting Bosnia’s territorial integrity sends a strong message to all parties involved. The EU remains committed to helping Bosnia and Herzegovina achieve its full potential, and the unity and integrity of the country are fundamental to this goal. The EU will continue to support and engage in efforts towards dialogue, reconciliation, and progress, and will not tolerate any actions that undermine these efforts.
