Germany’s Merz unveils stricter migration rules under coalition deal

April 10, 2025
in Europe

Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz announced on Wednesday that the Christian Democrats (CDU) and Social Democrats (SPD) have reached an agreement to adopt a stricter approach to irregular migration in their coalition government. This decision comes after months of negotiations and discussions between the two parties, and is seen as a significant step towards addressing the issue of illegal immigration in Germany.

The new policy, which is set to be implemented in the coming weeks, aims to tackle the growing problem of irregular migration in the country. It includes measures such as stricter border controls, increased cooperation with other European countries, and tougher penalties for those who enter the country illegally.

In his statement, Merz emphasized the importance of a united and strong stance on this issue, stating that “we cannot turn a blind eye to the challenges posed by irregular migration. It is our responsibility to protect our citizens and our borders, and we must take decisive action to do so.”

The CDU and SPD have been under pressure to address the issue of irregular migration, with the number of illegal entries into Germany increasing in recent years. This has not only put a strain on the country’s resources, but has also raised concerns about security and the integration of migrants into German society.

The new policy is a result of a compromise between the two parties, with the CDU pushing for stricter measures and the SPD advocating for a more humanitarian approach. The agreement shows that despite their differences, the two parties are able to work together for the greater good of the country.

One of the key aspects of the new policy is the strengthening of border controls. This will involve increasing the number of border patrol officers and implementing new technology to better monitor and secure the borders. This will not only help to prevent illegal entries, but also ensure the safety of those who are entering the country through legal channels.

In addition, the coalition government has also agreed to work closely with other European countries to address the issue of irregular migration. This includes sharing information and resources, as well as developing a common strategy to tackle the problem at its root.

The new policy also includes tougher penalties for those who enter the country illegally. This is aimed at deterring potential migrants from attempting to enter Germany through illegal means. At the same time, the government has also pledged to provide support and assistance to those who are seeking asylum through legal channels.

The announcement of this new policy has been met with positive reactions from both the public and political leaders. Many see it as a necessary step towards addressing the issue of irregular migration and ensuring the safety and security of the country.

However, there are also concerns about the potential impact of these measures on genuine refugees and asylum seekers. The government has assured that the new policy will not affect those who are seeking protection and refuge in Germany, and that their rights will be protected.

In conclusion, the agreement between the CDU and SPD to adopt a stricter approach to irregular migration is a significant development in the fight against illegal immigration in Germany. It shows that the coalition government is committed to addressing this issue and is willing to take decisive action to protect the country and its citizens. With this new policy in place, Germany can look towards a more secure and prosperous future for all.
