At least 129 killed in DR Congo attempted prison break

in Africa

At least 129 people were killed during an attempted prison break at the central Makala prison in the Congolese capital Kinshasa late Sunday. The Democratic Republic of Congo government has declared a state of emergency in the city and has promised to take swift action to bring those responsible to justice.

The incident, which has been described as one of the deadliest in the country’s recent history, took place when a group of armed men attacked the prison in an attempt to free their leader, a notorious criminal known as “Gangster King.” The attackers managed to break through the prison gates and engaged in a fierce gun battle with the guards.

The situation quickly escalated as the attackers set fire to parts of the prison, causing chaos and panic among the inmates. The Congolese army was called in to restore order, and after several hours of intense fighting, they were able to regain control of the prison.

Unfortunately, the toll of the violence was devastating. 129 people, including prison guards, inmates, and civilians, lost their lives in the chaos. Many others were injured and are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

President Felix Tshisekedi has expressed his deep sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, he said, “This is a tragic and senseless loss of life. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this heinous act of violence.” The president has also promised that the government will provide support and assistance to the families affected by this tragedy.

The Congolese government has vowed to take swift and decisive action against those responsible for the attack. The Minister of Justice, Celestin Tunda Ya Kasende, has declared that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and will face the full force of the law. He also assured the public that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The Makala prison has been a source of concern for the government for some time now. Overcrowding, poor living conditions, and lack of proper security measures have made it a breeding ground for criminal activities. The government has acknowledged these issues and has promised to take steps to improve the situation in the prison.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the need for urgent prison reform in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The government must prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens, including those who are serving time in prison. Steps must be taken to address the underlying issues that have led to this horrific incident and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The people of Congo are resilient and have shown great strength in the face of adversity. The government must work together with the people to bring peace and stability to the country. The citizens must also come together to support each other during this difficult time and show that they will not be intimidated by acts of violence.

This tragedy has also brought to light the bravery and dedication of the Congolese security forces. They risked their lives to protect the public and bring the situation under control. Their heroic actions deserve recognition and praise.

In the midst of this tragedy, we must not forget the victims and their families. They are the ones who have suffered the most and will continue to suffer the consequences of this senseless act. It is our duty as a society to support and uplift them during this difficult time.

As we mourn the loss of innocent lives, let us also remember that this incident does not define the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country is full of vibrant and resilient people who are working towards a better future. Let us come together and stand strong in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, the attempted prison break at the Makala prison in Kinshasa is a tragic event that has shaken the country. The government must take swift action to bring those responsible to justice and address the underlying issues that have led to this incident. The people of Congo must also come together to support each other and show that they will not be defeated by acts of violence. Let us honor the memory of the victims by working towards a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
