Kenya ‘shaken to core’ as anti-tax protest death toll climbs to 13

July 1, 2024
in Africa

At least 13 people have lost their lives in Kenya’s anti-tax hike protests, according to a statement released by a doctor’s association on Wednesday. The death toll has continued to rise as the protests, which started as a peaceful demonstration against the government’s proposed tax increase, turned violent.

The protests began on Monday, with Kenyans taking to the streets to express their frustration over the government’s plan to impose a 16% value-added tax (VAT) on fuel, as well as other new taxes. The move is part of the government’s efforts to raise revenue to fund its budget, but it has been met with strong opposition from citizens who say it will only increase the already high cost of living.

What started as a peaceful protest quickly turned chaotic, as some demonstrators resorted to violence, setting fires and blocking roads with burning tires. The police responded with tear gas and water cannons, leading to clashes between the two sides. This has resulted in injuries and deaths, with the number of casualties continuing to rise.

The doctor’s association, the Kenya Medical Association, has confirmed that at least 13 people have been killed in the protests, and many more have been injured. The association has also expressed concern over the use of excessive force by the police, which has led to these tragic deaths.

In the wake of these events, the Kenyan government has come under fire for its handling of the protests. Many have criticized the use of force by the police and called for a peaceful resolution to the situation. The government has also been urged to listen to the concerns of its citizens and reconsider the proposed tax hike.

The protests have also caused disruptions in the country, with businesses and schools being forced to close due to the violence. This has further added to the frustration of the citizens, who are already struggling with high living costs and a slowing economy.

However, amidst all the chaos and tragedy, there is still hope for a peaceful resolution. The government has agreed to hold talks with opposition leaders and other stakeholders to find a way forward. This is a positive step towards finding a solution that will benefit all parties involved.

In the midst of this crisis, it is important for all Kenyans to come together and remain united. We must remember that violence and destruction will not solve our problems. Instead, we must engage in peaceful dialogue and work towards finding a solution that will benefit the entire nation.

It is also crucial for the government to listen to the concerns of its citizens and take them into consideration when making decisions that will affect their lives. The proposed tax hike has been met with strong opposition, and it is important for the government to take a step back and reassess the situation.

The deaths of these 13 individuals are a tragic reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of finding a peaceful resolution. We must honor their memory by working towards a better future for our country, where the voices of all citizens are heard and taken into consideration.

In conclusion, the recent anti-tax hike protests in Kenya have resulted in the loss of lives and injuries, and have caused disruptions in the country. It is important for all parties involved to come together and find a peaceful solution to this crisis. Let us remember that violence will only lead to more suffering, and instead, let us work towards building a better and more prosperous nation for all Kenyans.
