At least 36 dead, 60 hospitalized in India after drinking toxic liquor

in Asia

At least 36 people have tragically lost their lives and over 60 have been hospitalized in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu after consuming adulterated alcohol, a government official confirmed on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday in the Kanchipuram district, where a group of people had gathered to celebrate a religious festival. They were served with locally brewed alcohol, commonly known as “toddy”, which is made from palm sap. However, it was later discovered that the alcohol had been laced with toxic substances, leading to the tragic outcome.

According to the state’s health department, the victims started showing symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting, dizziness, and loss of consciousness soon after consuming the alcohol. They were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals, where 36 people were pronounced dead and over 60 were admitted for treatment. The death toll is expected to rise as some of the hospitalized victims are said to be in critical condition.

The incident has sparked outrage among the local community, with many questioning the safety measures in place to prevent such tragedies. The state government has launched an investigation into the incident and has promised to take strict action against those responsible for the adulteration of the alcohol.

This is not the first time that such a tragedy has occurred in Tamil Nadu. In 2019, over 100 people lost their lives after consuming illicit liquor in the state. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of consuming adulterated alcohol and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The consumption of illicit alcohol is a widespread problem in India, especially in rural areas, where it is easily available and cheaper than legally produced alcohol. Many people, especially those from low-income backgrounds, are lured by the lower prices and end up consuming alcohol that has been adulterated with harmful substances such as methanol, pesticides, and even industrial chemicals.

The government must take immediate action to crack down on the production and sale of illicit alcohol. This includes conducting regular inspections of local breweries, enforcing strict penalties for those involved in the production and sale of adulterated alcohol, and educating the public about the dangers of consuming such substances.

In addition, the government must also work towards providing affordable and accessible alternatives to illicit alcohol. This could include setting up more licensed liquor shops, promoting the production of safer and regulated alcohol, and providing support and rehabilitation for those struggling with alcohol addiction.

The tragic incident in Tamil Nadu serves as a wake-up call for the government and the public to take action against the production and consumption of illicit alcohol. We must all work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities. Let us not forget the lives lost in this tragedy and take steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

In conclusion, the incident in Tamil Nadu is a tragic reminder of the dangers of consuming adulterated alcohol. The government must take immediate action to prevent such incidents from happening in the future, and the public must also be educated about the risks of consuming illicit alcohol. Let us come together and work towards creating a safer and healthier society for all.
