Israel has ‘clear will’ to annex West Bank: EU’s top diplomat

June 25, 2024
in Europe

The European Union’s top foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has expressed concerns over the recent developments in Israel’s plans for the annexation of the occupied West Bank. In an interview with the media, Borrell stated that Israel appears to have a “clear will” for the annexation, which could potentially threaten the peace efforts in the region.

The annexation plan, proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aims to incorporate parts of the West Bank into Israel’s territory. This move has been met with widespread criticism and condemnation from the international community.

Borrell, who also serves as the Vice-President of the European Commission, warned that any unilateral action by Israel to annex the West Bank would be considered a violation of international law and would have serious consequences. He emphasized that the EU has always supported a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.

The EU has been a key player in the peace process between Israel and Palestine for decades, providing support and aid to both sides. Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict, stating that the annexation plan would only escalate tensions and hinder any progress towards a negotiated solution.

The EU’s stance on the annexation plan has been made clear to Israeli officials, with Borrell stating that he has personally conveyed the message to Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gabi Ashkenazi. He emphasized that the EU is ready to engage in dialogue with Israel to find a solution that respects international law and the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians.

The annexation plan has also been met with criticism from various international organizations, including the United Nations and the Arab League. Many have expressed concerns over the potential displacement of Palestinians and the impact it would have on the already fragile situation in the region.

Borrell’s comments come at a crucial time, as Israel is set to begin discussions on the annexation plan in July. The EU has repeatedly called for a halt to any unilateral actions and has urged Israel to engage in dialogue with the Palestinians to find a peaceful solution.

The EU’s concern over the annexation plan is not only limited to the potential impact on the peace process, but also the repercussions it could have on the already strained relations between the EU and Israel. Borrell emphasized that the EU’s position on the annexation is in line with the international community, and any unilateral action by Israel would have consequences on the bilateral relations.

The EU has always been a strong supporter of Israel, with trade and economic ties between the two parties. However, Borrell warned that the annexation plan could potentially have a negative impact on these relations and could even lead to the suspension of certain agreements.

In conclusion, the EU’s top foreign policy chief has raised serious concerns over Israel’s plans for the annexation of the West Bank. Borrell’s remarks reflect the EU’s strong commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its firm stance against any unilateral actions. The EU is calling on Israel to reconsider its plans and engage in dialogue with the Palestinians to find a mutually acceptable solution that respects international law and the rights of both parties. The EU remains committed to supporting efforts towards a two-state solution and hopes that all parties involved will work towards a peaceful and prosperous future for the region.
