Sudanese paramilitary RSF kills 100 in village attack: Activists

June 6, 2024
in Africa

At least 100 innocent lives have been lost in a senseless and brutal attack carried out by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday. The tragic incident took place in a village in Gezira State, leaving the survivors and the global community in shock and mourning.

According to local activists, the RSF descended upon the village and opened fire on civilians, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people and injuring many more. The attack is said to have been carried out in retaliation for an earlier peaceful protest in the village against the RSF’s presence and actions in the region.

Despite the horrific details emerging from the attack, the Sudanese authorities have remained silent on the matter, with no official statement or condemnation. This has only added to the frustration and anger of the people, who are demanding justice and accountability for the lives lost.

The RSF, also known as the Janjaweed, was formed in 2013 to support and protect the ruling government in Sudan. However, over the years, they have been accused of numerous human rights violations, including attacks on civilians, destruction of villages, and violent suppression of protests.

The United Nations has denounced the attack, with the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) issuing a statement condemning the violence and calling for an immediate investigation. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has also urged the Sudanese government to hold those responsible accountable and to take measures to prevent such attacks in the future.

The international community has also voiced its outrage and concern over the incident. The European Union has expressed its shock and sadness over the loss of innocent lives and has called on the Sudanese authorities to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens. The African Union and the United States have also condemned the attack and called for justice and accountability.

The attack on the village in Gezira State is yet another example of the ongoing violence and instability in Sudan. The country has been facing a turbulent political situation, with mass protests and a military coup forcing former President Omar al-Bashir out of power in 2019. However, the transition to a civilian government has been marred by violence and tension, with the RSF continuing to carry out attacks and causing further unrest.

The people of Sudan have endured decades of conflict and suffering, and this attack is a tragic reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country. It is imperative that the international community takes action to prevent further violence and ensure the safety and rights of the Sudanese people.

Furthermore, the Sudanese government must also take responsibility and immediate action to address the root causes of the ongoing violence and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. It is crucial for the government to prioritize the protection of its citizens and work towards building a peaceful and stable nation.

The attack on the village in Gezira State has left a deep scar on the hearts of the Sudanese people. But in the face of tragedy, their resilience and determination to seek justice and a better future for all cannot be broken. As we mourn the lives lost, let us stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan and call for an end to the violence and a brighter future for all.
