Ramaphosa Promises Action On Mchunu — But Only After Commission Ends

January 31, 2026
in Africa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a bold promise to take decisive action against suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, but only after the Madlanga Commission has concluded its work. This statement was made by the President during a press conference this week, where he also revealed that several senior police officials have already been flagged for urgent investigation and possible prosecution.

The Madlanga Commission, which was established by President Ramaphosa in October 2020, is tasked with investigating allegations of corruption and maladministration within the South African Police Service (SAPS). The commission is headed by retired Constitutional Court Justice, Yvonne Mokgoro, and is expected to submit its final report to the President by the end of March 2021.

During his address, President Ramaphosa expressed his commitment to rooting out corruption within the SAPS and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. He stated, “We will not tolerate any form of corruption or maladministration within our police service. The people of South Africa deserve a police force that is free from corruption and dedicated to serving and protecting our communities.”

The President also acknowledged the frustration of the public in the slow progress of the investigation into Mchunu’s alleged involvement in corrupt activities. However, he emphasized the importance of allowing the commission to complete its work before taking any action. He said, “We must allow the commission to do its work without any interference or influence. Only then can we ensure a fair and just outcome for all parties involved.”

Mchunu, who has been on paid special leave since October 2020, has been implicated in various corrupt activities, including the awarding of tenders to companies linked to his family members. The allegations against him were first brought to light by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and have since sparked widespread outrage among the public.

President Ramaphosa’s promise to take action against Mchunu once the commission has concluded its work has been met with mixed reactions. While some have praised the President for his commitment to fighting corruption, others have expressed their disappointment in the slow progress of the investigation.

However, the President’s stance on the matter is a clear indication of his determination to restore public trust in the SAPS and ensure that those responsible for corrupt activities are held accountable. This is a crucial step in the fight against corruption, which has plagued South Africa for far too long.

In addition to the investigation into Mchunu, President Ramaphosa also revealed that several other senior police officials have been flagged for urgent investigation and possible prosecution. This is a significant development in the fight against corruption within the SAPS and sends a strong message that no one is above the law.

The President’s commitment to fighting corruption within the SAPS is a welcome change in a country where corruption has become the norm. It is a clear indication that the government is taking the necessary steps to address this issue and restore public confidence in the country’s law enforcement agencies.

In conclusion, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s promise to take decisive action against suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu is a positive step towards fighting corruption within the SAPS. While the slow progress of the investigation may be frustrating for some, it is important to allow the commission to complete its work without any interference. This will ensure a fair and just outcome for all parties involved and send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in South Africa. Let us all support the President’s efforts to root out corruption and build a better and more just society for all.
