‘No comment’: City firms on Starmer China trip keep schtum

January 30, 2026
in Asia

When Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, boarded a British Airways flight to Beijing earlier this week, he had a clear mission in mind – to strengthen the ties between the United Kingdom and China. But he didn’t embark on this journey alone. He brought with him a coterie of leaders from British industry, a diverse group of individuals who were all eager to help fly the flag for their country.

More than 50 delegates were invited to join the Prime Minister on his trip, representing a wide range of sectors and industries. Among them were top City institutions such as law firm Clifford Chance and accounting giant PwC, as well as representatives from the technology, healthcare, and education sectors. This impressive delegation showcased the diversity and strength of the British economy, and their presence on this trip was a testament to the close relationship between the UK and China.

The purpose of this trip was to promote trade and investment between the two countries, and the delegates wasted no time in getting down to business. They attended a series of high-level meetings and networking events, where they had the opportunity to showcase their expertise and explore potential partnerships with Chinese companies. The trip also included visits to key Chinese cities, such as Shanghai and Shenzhen, where the delegates were able to gain a deeper understanding of the local business landscape and culture.

One of the main highlights of the trip was the signing of several important agreements between British and Chinese companies. These agreements covered a wide range of areas, from finance and technology to healthcare and education. They are expected to bring significant benefits to both countries, creating new opportunities for trade and collaboration.

But this trip was not just about business. It was also about building stronger cultural and educational ties between the UK and China. The delegates had the chance to visit some of China’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, and experience the rich history and culture of this fascinating country. They also had the opportunity to meet with Chinese students and educators, discussing ways to enhance cooperation and exchange between the two countries’ education systems.

The success of this trip is a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between the UK and China. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, both countries have continued to work closely together, supporting each other and finding new ways to collaborate. This trip has further strengthened this bond, and it is clear that there is great potential for even closer cooperation in the future.

Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership and vision have played a crucial role in making this trip a success. His determination to promote British interests and strengthen ties with China has been commendable, and his efforts have been greatly appreciated by the delegates and the wider business community. This trip has not only opened up new opportunities for trade and investment but has also helped to showcase the UK’s strengths and capabilities to the world.

As we look towards the future, it is clear that the UK and China will continue to be important partners, working together to address global challenges and drive economic growth. The delegates who joined Sir Keir Starmer on this trip have played a vital role in this partnership, and their contributions will be remembered for years to come. They have shown that when British industry comes together, great things can be achieved, and the sky is the limit for what we can accomplish together.
