Border Patrol Agents in Minneapolis Shooting Placed on Standard Administrative Leave per CBP Firearms Policy

January 29, 2026
in Americas

In the aftermath of Saturday’s tragic shooting in Minneapolis, two Border Patrol agents have been placed on administrative leave according to standard procedures and policies set in place by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This decision was made in accordance with CBP’s firearms policy, which mandates a three-day administrative leave for agents involved in any shooting incident, and also requires them to seek support from the agency’s mental wellness Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

The shooting incident, involving Border Patrol agents and Alex Pretti, has drawn widespread attention and sparked debates about the use of firearms by law enforcement. While an investigation is still ongoing, CBP has taken swift action in implementing their protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all parties involved.

According to a source within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the decision to place the agents on administrative leave is a standard procedure that aims to provide them with time to recover from the traumatic event. This also gives investigators enough time to gather all necessary information and evidence without any interference or influence from the agents involved.

The EAP, which is available to all employees of CBP, provides confidential and professional support to help cope with any traumatic or stressful incidents. This program is a vital part of CBP’s comprehensive strategy to promote employee wellness and ensure the overall safety and security of our borders.

In light of this unfortunate incident, CBP’s swift and decisive action in adhering to their firearms policy sends a strong message about their commitment to upholding high standards of accountability and responsibility. It also highlights their dedication towards the mental and emotional well-being of their agents, who put their lives on the line to protect our borders every day.

Such incidents can take a toll on law enforcement officers and their families, and it is crucial to have proper support systems in place to address any challenges that may arise. The EAP not only provides professional assistance, but it also creates a safe and supportive environment for agents to seek help without any fear of judgment or stigma.

CBP’s firearms policy and the mandatory administrative leave for agents involved in shooting incidents is a crucial step in promoting transparency and accountability within the agency. It ensures that investigations are carried out objectively and thoroughly, without any bias or external influences.

As investigations continue into the Minneapolis shooting, CBP’s actions have set a positive example for other law enforcement agencies to follow. It is a reflection of their commitment towards maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity, even in the face of challenging situations.

In conclusion, the standard administrative leave and mandatory EAP support for Border Patrol agents involved in the Minneapolis shooting is a clear demonstration of CBP’s commitment to employee welfare and adherence to strict protocols. We must let the investigations run their course and trust in the due process being followed by CBP. Let us also not forget to extend our thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this tragic incident.
