Coinbase  ‘everything’s fine’ crypto ad banned by watchdog

January 28, 2026
in Asia

Cryptocurrency has been a hot topic in recent years, with many people investing in digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. As the popularity of cryptocurrency continues to rise, so does the number of advertisements promoting it. However, a recent cryptocurrency advert has caused controversy and has been banned by the advertising watchdog.

The advert in question was commissioned by Coinbase, a popular cryptocurrency trading platform, and featured a video ad and three posters. The video ad showed people in run-down homes singing “everything is fine” while surrounded by clutter and chaos. The posters also depicted similar scenes with the tagline “If you’re not investing in cryptocurrency, then what are you doing?”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received multiple complaints about the advert, stating that it trivialized the risks of investing in cryptocurrency and portrayed a false sense of security. After a thorough investigation, the ASA ruled that the advert must be banned, as it breached the advertising code of conduct.

The decision to ban the advert has sparked a debate among cryptocurrency enthusiasts and critics. Some argue that the advert was simply a creative way to promote cryptocurrency and that it should not be taken too seriously. Others believe that it downplayed the potential risks of investing in a volatile market.

However, the ASA’s decision to ban the advert is a step in the right direction. Cryptocurrency is a complex and ever-changing market, and it is essential to educate people about the risks involved. By portraying a false sense of security, the advert could have misled individuals into investing without fully understanding the potential consequences.

Cryptocurrency is not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it is crucial to approach it with caution and proper research. While it has the potential for high returns, it also comes with significant risks. The ASA’s decision to ban the advert sends a clear message that companies must be responsible when promoting cryptocurrency and not trivialize the potential risks involved.

Moreover, the advert’s depiction of people in grotty homes singing “everything is fine” is concerning. It perpetuates the idea that investing in cryptocurrency will solve all financial problems and lead to a luxurious lifestyle. This is far from the truth, and it is essential to promote responsible and realistic expectations when it comes to investing in cryptocurrency.

Coinbase has since apologized for the advert and stated that it was not their intention to trivialize the risks of investing in cryptocurrency. They have also removed the video ad and posters from their marketing campaign. This shows that they are taking responsibility for their actions and are committed to promoting cryptocurrency in a responsible manner.

In conclusion, the ban of the cryptocurrency advert by the ASA is a positive step towards promoting responsible investing. While cryptocurrency has the potential for high returns, it is crucial to educate individuals about the risks involved and not downplay them for the sake of marketing. As the market continues to evolve, it is essential for companies to be responsible and transparent in their advertising to avoid misleading individuals. Let us all remember that when it comes to investing, it is always better to be cautious than to be sorry.
