‘You Can Study In Jail’: Lusanda Mathabela Murder-Accused Denied Bail

February 21, 2026
in Africa

One of the most heartbreaking news in recent times has been the senseless murder of 19-year-old Lusanda Mathabela. The promising young woman lost her life in a brutal manner, leaving her loved ones and community in shock and mourning. But amidst this tragedy, there is a glimmer of hope for justice as two teenagers charged with her murder appeared in court. However, one of them, 18-year-old Lungelo Sithole, has been denied bail.

Lungelo Sithole and his co-accused, Katlego Mokoena, also 18, appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday for their bail hearing. Magistrate Patrick Morris ruled that Sithole’s reasons for release did not meet the legal threshold of exceptional circumstances. This decision, although heartbreaking for the accused’s family and friends, has been met with approval and relief from the public.

The death of Lusanda Mathabela has left a void not only in her family but also in the community of Nelspruit. She was a bright and determined young woman, with a promising future ahead of her. But her life was cut short at the hands of ruthless individuals. It is only right that justice is served for her and her loved ones. The denial of bail for one of the accused is a step in the right direction towards achieving this justice.

In his ruling, Magistrate Patrick Morris stated that Lungelo Sithole’s reasons for release did not meet the legal threshold of exceptional circumstances. This means that the accused did not provide sufficient evidence to prove that he deserves to be released on bail while awaiting trial. The court’s decision sends a strong message that the justice system will not take cases like this lightly and that those responsible for heinous crimes will be held accountable.

The denial of bail for Lungelo Sithole also serves as a reminder to the public that they can have faith in the South African justice system. It shows that the courts are not afraid to take a tough stance on criminals and that they are committed to serving justice for victims. This ruling brings hope for Lusanda Mathabela’s family and friends, who have been anxiously waiting for justice to be served.

The denial of bail also sends a message to others who may consider committing similar crimes. It shows that there are serious consequences for one’s actions and that the law will not be lenient on them. This should serve as a deterrent for potential criminals and help make our communities safer.

It is worth noting that Lungelo Sithole and his co-accused, Katlego Mokoena, are still innocent until proven guilty. However, the denial of bail for one of them is a step in the right direction towards finding the truth and serving justice for Lusanda Mathabela. The court’s decision is a glimmer of hope for her family and friends, who have been mourning her loss. It is also a reminder to the public that they should not lose faith in the justice system.

The denial of bail for Lungelo Sithole also highlights the seriousness of the crime he has been charged with. Murder is a heinous crime that can never be justified. Lusanda Mathabela’s life was worth more than anything in this world, and her death has left a void that can never be filled. The denial of bail for one of her alleged killers shows that the court recognizes the severity of this crime and is determined to serve justice for Lusanda and her loved ones.

In conclusion, the denial of bail for one of the teenagers charged with the murder of Lusanda Mathabela is a step in the right direction towards achieving justice for her and her family. It sends a message to the public that the justice system will not tolerate crimes like this and that those responsible will be held accountable. Let us hope that the court’s decision will bring some closure to Lusanda’s family and friends and serve as a lesson to others. As we mourn the loss of a promising young life, let us also hold onto the hope that justice will prevail.
