Premier League boom ‘masking’ English football’s financial woes, says BDO

January 21, 2026
in Asia

The Premier League, considered one of the most prestigious and competitive football leagues in the world, has been making headlines for its record revenues and extravagant transfer spending. Fans and pundits alike have been in awe of the multi-million-pound deals that have been struck between clubs, paving the way for some of the biggest names in the sport to join the league. However, a recent report by BDO, a leading business advisory firm, sheds light on the harsh reality that lies beneath the glitz and glamour of the Premier League.

According to BDO’s annual survey of finance directors at clubs in the top four divisions of English football, a staggering 90% of clubs are expected to report pre-tax trading losses for the year 2025. This is a concerning trend that has been observed for several years now and is only getting worse. The Premier League’s financial success and global popularity are overshadowing the financial struggles faced by clubs in lower divisions.

The report highlights the growing financial disparity between the top-tier clubs and those in lower divisions. While the Premier League clubs continue to break transfer records and generate massive revenues, those in the lower divisions are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up. With a lack of financial resources and limited commercial opportunities, these clubs are struggling to survive in an increasingly competitive and expensive football landscape.

The financial worries faced by clubs in the lower divisions are a cause for concern for the overall health of English football. The Premier League’s success is highly dependent on the development and success of clubs in lower divisions. These clubs act as a breeding ground for young talent and provide a platform for smaller clubs to compete against the big names. However, with the growing financial pressures, many of these clubs are facing the risk of bankruptcy, which could have a ripple effect on the entire football pyramid.

BDO’s report also revealed that the majority of clubs in lower divisions are relying on owner investment to sustain their operations. This means that the financial stability of these clubs is heavily dependent on the willingness and financial capabilities of their owners. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the global economy, many owners are facing financial constraints, making it even more challenging for these clubs to survive.

The Premier League’s dominance in the football world has led to a disparity in wealth and resources, which is only widening the gap between the top clubs and those in lower divisions. This is a concerning trend that needs to be addressed by all stakeholders in English football. While the Premier League’s success and its ability to attract top talent is commendable, it should not come at the cost of the financial stability of smaller clubs.

In recent years, there have been calls for the Premier League to share its wealth more equitably with clubs in lower divisions. While some measures have been taken, such as the introduction of solidarity payments to lower division clubs, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the financial imbalance in English football.

It is essential for the Premier League and its clubs to remember the importance of a strong and sustainable football pyramid. Without the support and development of clubs in lower divisions, the Premier League’s success and reputation will be at stake. It is time to take a collective approach and find solutions that will ensure the long-term financial stability of all clubs in English football.

In conclusion, while the Premier League’s record revenues and transfer spending continue to make headlines, it is crucial to acknowledge the financial struggles faced by clubs in lower divisions. The BDO report serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in English football to address the growing financial concerns and work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all clubs. Let us not forget the importance of a strong and thriving football pyramid and take necessary steps to ensure its well-being.
