‘Hijacked’ Ekurhuleni Housing Complex Owes R125m As Mass Evictions Begin

January 21, 2026
in Africa

Tenants living at Airport Park Phase 2, a municipal housing complex in Germiston, are facing a dire situation as they owe a staggering R85 million in unpaid rent and R40 million in outstanding rates and taxes. This is a serious issue that has caught the attention of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the Ekurhuleni Housing Company (EHC), who are the owners and managers of the property respectively.

The EHC’s chief operating officer, Zingisani, has revealed that the situation is quite alarming, as the amount owed by the tenants has reached a whopping R125 million. This has put a strain on the financial resources of the municipality and has forced them to take drastic measures to address the issue.

One of the steps being taken by the municipality is the initiation of mass evictions, which have already begun. This has caused a lot of turmoil and distress among the tenants, who are now facing the possibility of losing their homes. Many of these tenants are low-income earners who rely on the affordable housing provided by the municipality. This unfortunate situation has left them in a state of uncertainty and fear for their future.

The EHC has stated that the reason for the high amount owed by the tenants is due to the fact that many of them have been illegally subletting their units, resulting in them not paying their rent. This has been an ongoing issue that has not been addressed by the tenants, despite numerous warnings and notices from the EHC. As a result, the municipality has been left with no choice but to take legal action against these tenants.

However, it is important to note that not all tenants are at fault. There are some who have been struggling to make ends meet due to job losses and financial difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The EHC has assured that they are working closely with these tenants to find a solution and provide them with the necessary support.

The EHC has also stated that they have implemented various measures to prevent the situation from escalating further. These include stricter screening processes for potential tenants, regular audits to identify any illegal subletting, and the implementation of a payment plan for those who are struggling to pay their rent. The municipality has also urged tenants to come forward and engage with them to find a solution.

The situation at Airport Park Phase 2 is a sobering reminder of the importance of being responsible and accountable for our actions. Subletting a unit without permission is not only illegal but also has severe consequences for both the tenant and the municipality. It is crucial for tenants to understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to renting a property and to adhere to the rules and regulations set by the EHC.

As a community, it is important for us to support and work together with the municipality to find a solution to this issue. The EHC has provided affordable housing to many low-income families, and it is our responsibility to ensure that these properties are managed effectively and sustainably. Let us all play our part in creating a safe and secure environment for everyone.

In conclusion, the situation at Airport Park Phase 2 is a cause for concern, but it is not a lost cause. The municipality and the EHC are taking proactive steps to address the issue and ensure that the tenants are provided with the necessary support. It is important for us as a community to come together and work towards finding a solution that benefits everyone. Let us not forget that we are all in this together and that by working together, we can overcome any challenge.
