Nearly 100 per cent of sport organisations plan to increase AI use

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in sports has been on the rise in recent years, and it shows no signs of slowing down. According to the 2026 Global SportsTech Report, nearly 100 per cent of sports organisations are planning to increase their use of AI in the next year. This data highlights the growing importance of AI in the sports industry and its potential to revolutionize the way we play and watch sports.

The study, conducted by SportsPro and Sportradar, surveyed sports organisations from various sectors of the industry, including teams, leagues, and media companies. The results showed that AI is becoming an integral part of their operations, with 86 per cent of respondents already using some form of AI technology. This number is expected to reach 100 per cent in the next year, indicating a significant shift towards AI adoption in the sports world.

So, what exactly is AI, and how is it being used in sports? AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. In sports, AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data, make predictions, and assist in decision-making processes. It is also being used to enhance the fan experience by providing personalized content and recommendations.

One of the most significant areas where AI is making an impact is in player performance analysis. With the help of AI, coaches and trainers can track and analyze players’ movements, speed, and other vital statistics in real-time. This data can then be used to make informed decisions about training, strategy, and player selection. AI-powered wearable technology is also being used to monitor players’ health and prevent injuries, ultimately improving their performance on the field.

Apart from player performance, AI is also being used to enhance the fan experience. With the rise of digital media, fans now have access to an overwhelming amount of content. AI is being used to personalize this content and provide fans with a more tailored experience. For example, AI-powered algorithms can analyze a fan’s viewing history and preferences to recommend relevant content, such as highlights, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage. This not only keeps fans engaged but also helps sports organisations to better understand their audience and tailor their content accordingly.

The use of AI is not limited to just on-field performance and fan engagement. It is also being used to improve the overall efficiency and operations of sports organisations. For instance, AI-powered chatbots are being used to handle customer inquiries and provide quick and accurate responses. This not only saves time and resources but also improves the overall customer experience.

The 2026 Global SportsTech Report also highlighted the potential for AI to generate new revenue streams for sports organisations. With the help of AI, teams and leagues can analyze fan data and preferences to create targeted marketing campaigns and offer personalized merchandise. This not only increases fan engagement but also generates additional revenue for the organisation.

The increasing use of AI in sports is not without its challenges. One of the main concerns is the potential bias in AI algorithms, which can lead to unfair decisions and outcomes. To address this issue, sports organisations must ensure that their AI systems are regularly monitored and audited to eliminate any biases. Additionally, proper training and education must be provided to those using AI to ensure its responsible and ethical use.

In conclusion, the 2026 Global SportsTech Report has shed light on the growing presence of AI in the sports industry. With nearly 100 per cent of sports organisations planning to increase their use of AI in the next year, it is clear that AI is here to stay. From player performance analysis to fan engagement and revenue generation, AI has the potential to transform the way we play and experience sports. However, it is crucial to address any potential challenges and ensure responsible and ethical use of AI in the sports world. The future of sports is undoubtedly intertwined with AI, and it is an exciting time to be a part of this technological revolution.
