in Africa

Police have launched a manhunt following a brazen cash-in-transit robbery in Old Geelhout Park, Rustenburg, on Monday afternoon. The incident has left the community in shock and has once again highlighted the need for increased security measures in the transportation of cash.

According to reports, the robbery took place at around 4:40 pm on 16 February 2026. A security vehicle, transporting a large sum of cash, was targeted by a group of heavily armed suspects along Kremetart Street. The suspects, believed to be at least 15 in number, used a Toyota vehicle to ram and block the cash van, before setting it on fire.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with the suspects firing multiple shots into the air to intimidate bystanders. The security guards were overpowered and forced to flee the scene, leaving the suspects with the stolen cash. The suspects then fled the scene in multiple vehicles, leaving behind a trail of destruction and chaos.

The police were immediately alerted and have since launched a manhunt for the suspects. The area has been cordoned off and a thorough investigation is underway. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

This brazen attack has once again raised concerns about the safety of cash-in-transit operations in the country. It is not the first time that such a daring robbery has taken place, and it is a clear indication that more needs to be done to protect the transportation of cash.

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) has expressed their concern over the increasing number of cash-in-transit robberies in the country. They have called for a collaborative effort between the police, private security companies, and the banking industry to address this issue.

In a statement, SABRIC CEO, Kalyani Pillay, said, “We cannot allow these criminals to continue to terrorize our communities and put the lives of innocent people at risk. It is imperative that we work together to find solutions and prevent these types of attacks from happening in the future.”

The safety of our citizens should be a top priority, and it is essential that measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring. The police have assured the public that they are doing everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The community of Rustenburg has also expressed their shock and concern over the incident. Many have called for increased security measures in the area, especially during peak times when cash-in-transit vehicles are most vulnerable.

In response to the incident, the Rustenburg Community Policing Forum (CPF) has urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police. They have also called for a community meeting to discuss ways to improve safety and security in the area.

The brazen cash-in-transit robbery in Rustenburg serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to work together and find solutions to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. It is a reminder that the safety and security of our communities should be a top priority, and we must all play our part in ensuring it.

In conclusion, the incident in Rustenburg is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those responsible for transporting cash. It is a call to action for all stakeholders to come together and find ways to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. Let us stand united against these criminals and work towards a safer and more secure South Africa.
