Keir Starmer U-turns on plans to cancel 30 local elections

February 17, 2026
in Asia

In a recent turn of events, the government has decided to shelve its plans to postpone local elections for 30 councils in England that were scheduled for May. This decision comes as a relief to many communities across the country, as they were eagerly anticipating the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

The announcement was made by Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who stated that the decision was made “in the light of recent legal advice”. This comes after a planned High Court hearing that was set for Thursday, which would have decided the fate of the local elections. According to a letter from the Government Legal Department, shared by Reed, it was concluded that any delay in the elections would be “unlawful and disproportionate”.

This decision is a testament to the government’s commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law. It shows that they are willing to listen to legal advice and make the necessary adjustments to ensure that the democratic process is not hindered in any way.

The local elections are a crucial part of our democratic system, giving people the chance to have a say in how their communities are governed. Postponing them would have denied citizens the right to choose their representatives and have their voices heard. Not only that, but it would have also undermined the trust and confidence in the government’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

Furthermore, postponing the elections would have had a significant impact on the functioning of local authorities. With the ongoing pandemic and the challenges it has brought, it is more important than ever to have stable and accountable local governments. Delaying the elections would have led to a period of uncertainty and lack of leadership, which would have been detrimental to the well-being of our communities.

The decision to shelve the plans to postpone the local elections is a victory for the people and their right to participate in the democratic process. It shows that the government values the voices of its citizens and is committed to ensuring that their views are heard and respected.

This move also highlights the government’s ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances. With the ongoing pandemic, it is crucial to be flexible and make necessary adjustments to ensure the smooth running of our democratic system. The government has shown that it is capable of doing just that, and this decision is a testament to their commitment to the well-being of our communities.

In conclusion, the government’s decision to shelve the plans to postpone the local elections in May is a positive and welcome development. It upholds the principles of democracy and the rule of law, and ensures that the voices of the people are not silenced. It also demonstrates the government’s ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances, which is crucial in these challenging times. Let us all look forward to the upcoming local elections and exercise our right to vote for a better and brighter future for our communities.
