If Russia wins, one year on

February 3, 2026
in Asia

One year ago, Carlo Masala, the renowned German professor of security and defence policy, completed his book “Wenn Russland gewinnt” (“If Russia Wins”). At that time, the book was considered a thought-provoking and timely analysis of the current state of international relations. However, one year on, as we look back on the events that have transpired since the book’s publication, we can see that its warnings about the West’s complacency are more important than ever.

Masala’s book delves into the complex relationship between Russia and the West, and how the West’s lack of strategic thinking and action has allowed Russia to gain the upper hand. He argues that while the West has been focused on internal issues and conflicts in the Middle East, Russia has been making strategic moves to strengthen its position on the world stage. Masala warns that if the West continues to ignore this threat, it may be too late to stop Russia from achieving its goals.

Looking back on the past year, we can see that Masala’s warnings were not unfounded. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014 was a blatant display of its ambitions and disregard for international law. This was followed by ongoing military involvement in Ukraine, which continues to this day. These actions clearly demonstrate Russia’s desire to expand its influence and exert its power on the global stage.

In addition, Masala’s book also highlights the issue of energy dependency as a means for Russia to assert its dominance over Europe. This has become increasingly relevant in light of the recent Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline controversy. Many European countries, especially Germany, are heavily reliant on Russian natural gas, giving Russia significant leverage in negotiations and decision-making processes. This puts Europe at a disadvantage when it comes to dealing with Russia’s aggressive foreign policy.

Moreover, Masala’s book also addresses the issue of cyber warfare and how Russia has been using it as a tool to interfere in Western democracies. This has been seen in the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and the recent cyber attacks on European countries. These actions pose a significant threat to the integrity of democratic processes and highlight the need for the West to strengthen its cyber security measures.

One year on, it is clear that Masala’s book was a wake-up call for the West. However, has this wake-up call been heeded? Unfortunately, the answer seems to be no. The West’s response to Russia’s aggressive actions has been slow and fragmented. There have been some sanctions imposed on Russia, but they have not been strong enough to deter further aggression. The lack of a unified and decisive response from the West has only emboldened Russia in its actions.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for the West to take Masala’s warnings seriously and act upon them. As the saying goes, “forewarned is forearmed”. Masala’s book provides valuable insights into Russia’s intentions and strategies, and it is imperative for the West to recognize and address these threats.

Firstly, the West needs to develop a comprehensive and unified strategy to counter Russia’s actions. This should include stronger sanctions, increased military presence in Eastern Europe, and a more assertive approach in dealing with Russia’s aggressive foreign policy.

Secondly, the West needs to reduce its energy dependency on Russia and diversify its energy sources. This will not only reduce Russia’s leverage, but it will also provide more options for the West to respond to any potential energy-related threats from Russia.

Lastly, the West must strengthen its cyber security measures to defend against Russian interference. This should include cooperation and information sharing between countries, as well as investing in advanced cyber security technology and personnel.

In conclusion, Masala’s book “Wenn Russland gewinnt” was a timely and prescient warning about the West’s complacency towards Russia. One year on, as we reflect on the events that have unfolded, it is clear that his warnings were not heeded. Russia’s actions in the past year have only reinforced the urgency of addressing the threats posed by the country. It is time for the West to take a more proactive and united stance towards Russia, before it’s too late. As Masala rightly stated, “If Russia wins, the West loses”. Let us not allow that to happen.
