Malta to recognize Palestinian statehood

July 31, 2025
in Europe

Malta has taken a significant step towards recognizing the Palestinian state, with Prime Minister Robert Abela announcing on Tuesday evening that the country will formally recognize Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September.

This decision comes amid growing international pressure for countries to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. The move by Malta is a strong statement of support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.

In his address, Prime Minister Abela stated that Malta has always been a strong advocate for peace and stability in the Middle East region. He emphasized that the recognition of Palestine as a state is in line with the country’s principles of promoting human rights and international law.

The announcement has been welcomed by the Palestinian Authority, with President Mahmoud Abbas expressing his gratitude to the Maltese government for their support. This recognition is a significant diplomatic victory for Palestine, as it continues to fight for its rightful place on the world stage.

The decision also reflects the growing sentiment among European countries to recognize Palestine as a state. In recent years, several European countries, including Sweden, Ireland, and Spain, have officially recognized Palestine. This move by Malta further strengthens the call for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Malta’s recognition of Palestine sends a strong message to the international community that the Palestinian people deserve their own state, with full sovereignty and control over their own affairs. It is a step towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.

The announcement by Prime Minister Abela also highlights Malta’s commitment to upholding the values of democracy and human rights. By recognizing Palestine, Malta is standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom and independence.

This decision is not only a political one but also a moral one. It reaffirms Malta’s belief in the importance of respecting the rights of all nations, regardless of their size or power. It is a clear demonstration of the country’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.

Malta’s recognition of Palestine is a significant milestone in the country’s foreign policy. It shows that Malta is a responsible and principled member of the international community, willing to take a stand for what is right and just.

The move has also been praised by the United Nations, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commending Malta for its decision. He stated that this recognition will contribute to the efforts of the international community in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In light of this announcement, it is essential for other countries to follow in Malta’s footsteps and recognize Palestine as a state. It is time for the international community to come together and support the Palestinian people in their quest for statehood and self-determination.

In conclusion, Malta’s decision to recognize Palestine is a significant step towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. It is a testament to the country’s commitment to promoting human rights and upholding international law. This move sends a powerful message to the world that Malta stands with the Palestinian people and supports their right to a sovereign state. Let us hope that other countries will join Malta in recognizing Palestine, and together, we can work towards a better and more peaceful future for all.
