At least 12 dead, 17 missing as Storm Bualoi batters Vietnam

September 30, 2025
in Asia

At least 12 people have been tragically killed and 17 fishermen are missing after Tropical Storm Bualoi wreaked havoc in central Vietnam, according to state media reports on Monday.

The deadly storm hit the Ninh Thuan and Khanh Hoa provinces over the weekend, causing severe flooding and strong winds. The Vietnam Disaster Management Authority stated that the storm brought in heavy rains of up to 700 millimeters, causing landslides and widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

The casualties reported were from both provinces, with Ninh Thuan alone accounting for 10 deaths and 14 missing fishermen. Reports also state that over 30,000 homes have been damaged, leaving many families displaced and in need of assistance.

The Vietnamese government and local authorities have launched rescue efforts and provided emergency aid to affected areas. However, the search and rescue operations have been hampered by the harsh weather conditions.

Tropical Storm Bualoi is the latest in a series of natural disasters that have struck Vietnam in recent years, causing widespread devastation and loss of life. In 2018, Typhoon Damrey caused the deaths of 106 people and left over 200,000 homes damaged.

The continuous onslaught of natural disasters in Vietnam has raised concerns about the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather conditions, which have become more intense and frequent in recent years due to climate change.

The Vietnamese government has acknowledged the need for more proactive measures to mitigate the impact of these disasters and has invested in disaster preparedness and risk reduction efforts. However, the recent events have highlighted the need for more comprehensive and swift action to protect the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.

In light of this tragedy, the international community has also extended its support and solidarity to Vietnam. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has already released $100,000 in emergency funds to assist with relief efforts.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross Society of Vietnam has mobilized volunteers to help with search and rescue operations and distribute essential items such as food, clean water, and hygiene kits to affected communities.

The Vietnamese people have also come together to support each other in this time of crisis. Many have opened their homes to those who have been displaced and have donated food and supplies to those in need.

Although the situation in central Vietnam remains dire, the resilience and strength of the Vietnamese people give hope for a swift recovery and rebuilding of affected areas.

As we mourn the loss of lives and the destruction caused by Tropical Storm Bualoi, we must also remain vigilant and prepared for future disasters. The Vietnamese government, along with the support of the international community and its citizens, must continue to prioritize disaster risk reduction efforts and invest in sustainable solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.

In this dark moment, let us stand united and extend our thoughts and prayers to those affected by this tragedy. Together, we can overcome this and emerge stronger and more resilient.
