Ending Rohingya ethnic cleansing global duty: Bangladesh’s Yunus

Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Calls for an End to Ethnic Cleansing of Rohingya

Bangladesh’s interim leader and Nobel Peace laureate, Muhammad Yunus, made a powerful statement on Monday, calling for an end to the ethnic cleansing of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya community. Speaking to the media, Yunus emphasized the moral responsibility that lies on the shoulders of the international community to put an end to this humanitarian crisis.

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group, have faced decades of persecution and discrimination in Myanmar, with the latest wave of violence in 2017 forcing over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. These refugees have been living in overcrowded and under-resourced camps, facing immense challenges in accessing basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare.

In light of this dire situation, Yunus, who is also known as the “banker to the poor” for his pioneering work in microfinance, stressed the urgency of addressing the root cause of this crisis. He stated, “The world cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Rohingya people. It is our moral responsibility to ensure that their rights are protected and their voices are heard.”

Yunus’ call for action comes as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to hear a case against Myanmar for alleged genocide against the Rohingya. Bangladesh, along with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has filed this case, seeking justice for the atrocities committed against the Rohingya.

The Nobel laureate also highlighted the need for a long-term solution that addresses the root causes of the crisis. He stated, “We cannot continue to treat the symptoms of this crisis. We must address the underlying issues of discrimination and statelessness faced by the Rohingya community.”

Yunus also called upon the international community to provide support and assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. He stated, “Bangladesh has been bearing the brunt of this crisis for far too long. We need the support of the international community to provide a safe and dignified life for these refugees.”

The interim leader’s statement has received widespread support from various organizations and leaders around the world. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commended Yunus for his leadership and called for immediate action to end the suffering of the Rohingya.

Furthermore, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has also expressed its support for Yunus’ call for an end to the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya. In a statement, the museum’s director, Sara J. Bloomfield, stated, “We must stand in solidarity with the Rohingya people and demand that Myanmar end its campaign of violence and persecution against them.”

Yunus’ powerful message serves as a reminder of the responsibility we all have in standing up against injustice and defending the rights of marginalized communities. As a Nobel laureate and a respected leader, his words carry a strong moral weight, and it is imperative that they are heard and acted upon.

In conclusion, Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, has made a call for an end to the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya community. His statement highlights the urgent need for action and a long-term solution to address the root causes of this humanitarian crisis. It is a call that must be heeded by the international community, and we all have a moral responsibility to ensure that the rights and dignity of the Rohingya people are protected and upheld.
