Jeffries: Johnson Calling Dems ‘Legislative Terrorists’ Is ‘Going to Get Someone Killed’

October 24, 2025
in Americas

On Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) appeared on CNN’s “The Situation Room” to discuss the ongoing government shutdown. During the interview, he expressed concern over House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) recent comments, stating that they could potentially result in harm and even death.

In a shocking statement, Johnson referred to Democrats as “legislative terrorists” for their refusal to fund President Trump’s proposed border wall. He also claimed that they were holding the government hostage and causing harm to the American people. Jeffries condemned these words, firmly stating that they “are going to get someone killed.”

The current government shutdown, which began on December 22nd, has now entered its 27th day, making it the longest shutdown in US history. Despite multiple attempts at negotiations and compromises, the stalemate between Democrats and Republicans over the proposed wall on the southern border continues. As a result, many government employees are facing financial hardships, and essential services are being put on hold.

The tension and frustration surrounding this situation are palpable, and Johnson’s comments only serve to further escalate the situation. As a leader in Congress, his words hold weight and influence, and using such extreme language only adds fuel to the fire.

In his interview, Jeffries emphasized the need for civil discourse and respectful language in the midst of this political divide. He reminded viewers that the government shutdown is a direct result of President Trump’s insistence on funding for the wall, and not the fault of the Democrats as Johnson suggests.

Jeffries also pointed out the irony in Johnson’s comments, as it was the Republicans who were responsible for the 2013 government shutdown over defunding the Affordable Care Act. He urged Johnson to reflect on the consequences of his words and the potential harm they can cause.

As the shutdown continues with no end in sight, it is crucial for our leaders to set an example for the rest of the country. Instead of resorting to name-calling and inflammatory rhetoric, they should be working together to find a solution that benefits all Americans.

In these challenging times, it is essential to remember that we are all on the same team – the American team. Our diversity is what makes us strong, and it is imperative that we come together as a nation to find a resolution to this crisis. As citizens, we must demand that our leaders act with dignity and respect, and put the needs of the people above political agendas.

In conclusion, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ statement on CNN’s “The Situation Room” serves as a reminder to us all of the power of our words. In this tense political climate, it is more crucial than ever to promote unity and understanding, rather than division and hostility. Let us hope that our leaders take heed of Jeffries’ words and work towards a swift and peaceful resolution to the government shutdown. As Jeffries aptly said, “We are not enemies, we are all Americans.”
