Hundreds cross into Azerbaijan and Armenia fleeing unrest in Iran

June 18, 2025
in Asia

More than 600 people from 17 different countries have crossed into Azerbaijan from Iran over the past five days amid the ongoing Israel–Iran air conflict, an Azerbaijani source familiar with the situation has reported.

The influx of people seeking refuge in Azerbaijan is a clear indication of the country’s open arms and welcoming attitude towards those in need. Despite the ongoing tensions in the region, Azerbaijan has remained a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict.

According to the source, the majority of the refugees are from neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. However, there are also individuals from further afield, including Yemen, Lebanon, and even as far as Sudan.

The decision to seek refuge in Azerbaijan was not an easy one for these individuals. Many of them have left behind their homes, families, and livelihoods in search of safety and security. But the warm reception they have received in Azerbaijan has given them hope for a better future.

Azerbaijan has a long history of providing shelter to those in need. During the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the 1990s, the country opened its doors to thousands of refugees from neighboring Armenia. This act of kindness and generosity has not been forgotten by those who have sought refuge in Azerbaijan once again.

The Azerbaijani government has taken swift action to ensure that the refugees are provided with the necessary support and assistance. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate the influx of people, and basic necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies have been provided.

The country’s humanitarian efforts have not gone unnoticed by the international community. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has commended Azerbaijan for its quick response and efforts to provide aid to those in need.

The UNHCR has also called on the international community to support Azerbaijan in its humanitarian efforts. As the conflict in the region continues, the number of refugees seeking shelter in Azerbaijan is expected to increase. It is crucial for the international community to come together and provide assistance to the country in its efforts to provide a safe haven for these individuals.

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, Azerbaijan has remained committed to its values of compassion and solidarity. The country has shown that it is possible to rise above political differences and extend a helping hand to those in need.

The influx of refugees into Azerbaijan is a reminder of the devastating impact of war and conflict on innocent civilians. It is a call to action for the international community to work towards finding peaceful solutions to conflicts and to provide support to those affected by them.

As the refugees settle into their temporary homes in Azerbaijan, they have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the warm welcome they have received. Many have shared stories of the horrors they have faced in their home countries and the relief they feel to have found safety in Azerbaijan.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has caused immense suffering and displacement for many innocent people. However, the actions of Azerbaijan in providing refuge to those affected have given hope and a sense of humanity in the midst of chaos.

In a world where conflicts and tensions seem to be ever-present, the compassion and generosity shown by Azerbaijan towards those in need is a shining example of the power of humanity. It is a reminder that in times of crisis, it is our duty to come together and help those in need, regardless of nationality or political differences.

As the situation in the region continues to unfold, let us not forget the thousands of individuals who have found a safe haven in Azerbaijan. Let us also remember the importance of extending a helping hand to those in need and working towards a more peaceful and compassionate world.
