Nancy Pelosi Snaps at Reporter Asking Why She Refused National Guard on January 6: ‘Shut Up’

October 16, 2025
in Americas

On January 6, 2021, the United States Capitol was under siege as a violent mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. As the chaos unfolded, one question remained on the minds of many Americans: why were the National Guard not called in to protect the Capitol and its inhabitants?

This question was posed to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) by a reporter during a press conference on January 7. However, instead of providing a calm and composed response, Rep. Pelosi snapped at the reporter and told them to “shut up.” This outburst has since sparked controversy and criticism, with many questioning the Speaker’s handling of the situation.

The incident occurred after Rep. Pelosi had just been re-elected as Speaker of the House for the 117th Congress. As she took questions from reporters, one journalist asked her why she had refused to send the National Guard to protect the Capitol on the day of the riots. In response, Rep. Pelosi became visibly agitated and snapped at the reporter, saying, “I’m not talking to you. I said, ‘shut up’.”

This heated exchange has been captured on video and has since gone viral, with many expressing their disappointment and frustration with Rep. Pelosi’s behavior. Some have even accused her of avoiding accountability and attempting to deflect blame for the lack of security at the Capitol.

It is understandable that emotions were running high in the aftermath of such a traumatic event. However, as a leader and public figure, Rep. Pelosi’s response was unprofessional and unbecoming of someone in her position. Instead of addressing the question and providing a clear explanation, she resorted to snapping and shutting down the conversation.

This incident has also raised concerns about the decision-making process leading up to the riots. It has been reported that the Pentagon had denied a request from the Capitol Police to have the National Guard on standby before the protests turned violent. This has led to speculation and criticism about the lack of preparedness and response from law enforcement and government officials.

In the days following the riots, Rep. Pelosi has called for the resignation of the Chief of the Capitol Police and has announced plans for a 9/11-style commission to investigate the events of January 6. While these actions are necessary and important, it is also crucial for leaders to be able to address tough questions and provide clear explanations to the public.

As the Speaker of the House, Rep. Pelosi holds a significant amount of power and influence. It is her responsibility to lead by example and to handle difficult situations with grace and professionalism. In this instance, her outburst only added fuel to the fire and diverted attention away from the important issues at hand.

In the midst of a global pandemic and political turmoil, the American people are looking to their leaders for guidance and stability. It is essential for elected officials to remain composed and accountable, even in the face of challenging questions and criticism.

In conclusion, Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s response to the reporter’s question about the National Guard on January 6 was unacceptable and unprofessional. As a leader, it is important to address tough questions and provide clear explanations to the public. The American people deserve transparency and accountability from their elected officials, especially during times of crisis. Let us hope that in the future, our leaders will handle difficult situations with the poise and professionalism that is expected of them.
