India launches probe into deadly Air India crash that killed 241

June 14, 2025
in Asia

Authorities have launched an investigation into one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters after an Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming the lives of 241 out of 242 people on board. The tragic incident has left the nation in shock and mourning, with the entire country coming together to offer their condolences to the families of the victims.

The Air India Express flight, which was carrying 184 passengers and 8 crew members, was en route from Dubai to Kozhikode in the southern state of Kerala when it overshot the runway and plunged into a valley. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, broke into two pieces upon impact, leaving a trail of devastation and destruction.

The crash, which occurred on Friday evening, has been described as one of the worst aviation disasters in India’s history. The flight was part of the Vande Bharat Mission, a repatriation effort to bring back Indian nationals stranded abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The passengers on board included Indian citizens as well as foreign nationals, who were all eagerly looking forward to reuniting with their loved ones after months of separation.

As soon as news of the crash broke, authorities sprang into action, with rescue teams rushing to the site to search for survivors. The local police, fire department, and medical teams worked tirelessly through the night to pull out the injured and retrieve the bodies of the deceased. The heroic efforts of these first responders have been commendable, and their dedication and bravery in the face of such a tragedy is truly inspiring.

The survivors, who were rushed to nearby hospitals, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries. The state government has announced that all medical expenses for the victims will be covered by the state, and the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance as well.

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his grief and condolences in a series of tweets, saying, “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest.” He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The aviation minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash. The black box of the aircraft has been recovered, and the data retrieved from it will provide crucial information to the investigators. The Civil Aviation Ministry has also ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been tasked with the investigation.

The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of air travel in India. However, it is important to note that India’s aviation industry has an excellent safety record, with only a few incidents reported in the past decade. The country’s aviation sector has been growing at a rapid pace, and the government has taken several measures to ensure the safety and security of passengers.

In the wake of this tragedy, the government has announced that all airports in the country will undergo a safety audit to identify and rectify any potential risks. The Civil Aviation Ministry has also directed all airlines to conduct a safety audit of their aircraft and ensure that all safety protocols are being followed strictly.

The Air India Express flight crash is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety in air travel. It is a tragedy that has left a deep scar on the nation’s collective consciousness. However, it is also a testament to the resilience and strength of the Indian people, who have come together to support each other in this time of grief.

As the investigation into the crash continues, we must remember to honor the memories of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. Let us also take this opportunity to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our first responders and aviation authorities, who are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of air travel in India.

In the face of this tragedy, let us stand united and offer our support and solidarity to the families of the victims. Together, we can overcome this difficult time and emerge stronger, with a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all air travelers in India.
