“The Positive Impact of Politics on Society”

February 13, 2025
in World

Politics often gets a bad reputation, with many people associating it with corruption, scandals, and power struggles. However, it is important to remember that politics is also responsible for shaping our society, making positive changes, and creating a better future for all of us. In fact, there are many positive experiences that can be attributed to politics, and it is time to shed light on them.
Recently, the world witnessed a heartwarming example of how politics can bring about positive change. Kory Tarpenning, a former Oregon state representative, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a bribery scheme. While this may seem like a negative event, it actually highlights the power of politics to hold individuals accountable for their actions and uphold justice.
Tarpenning was found guilty of accepting bribes in exchange for using his political influence to secure state contracts for a private company. This is a clear violation of the public’s trust and goes against the very essence of politics, which is to serve the people. However, the fact that he was sentenced shows that the justice system is working and that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or power.
This positive experience serves as a reminder that politics is not just about gaining power and personal gain, but also about serving the greater good and upholding the values of democracy. It also highlights the importance of having a fair and just legal system, which is a crucial aspect of any functioning political system.
Moreover, politics has the power to bring about significant social change. Throughout history, we have seen political leaders and movements fight for civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and many other important causes. These changes would not have been possible without the involvement of politics.
For instance, in the United States, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a result of the political efforts of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lyndon B. Johnson. This legislation outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin and paved the way for a more equal and just society. Similarly, the fight for marriage equality for the LGBTQ+ community was won through political activism and the passing of laws such as the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling in 2015.
Politics also plays a crucial role in shaping our economy. Through policies and legislation, governments can create a favorable business environment, promote job growth, and support small businesses. For example, the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, signed into law by President Barack Obama, provided tax cuts and access to capital for small businesses, leading to job creation and economic growth.
In addition, politics has the power to bring nations together and promote peace. Through diplomacy and international relations, political leaders can resolve conflicts and promote cooperation between countries. The recent historic peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is a prime example of how politics can bring about positive change and foster peace in the world.
Furthermore, politics also plays a crucial role in addressing global issues such as climate change and poverty. Through international agreements and policies, governments can work together to combat these pressing issues and create a better world for future generations.
In conclusion, while politics may have its flaws and negative aspects, it is important to recognize the positive experiences and outcomes that can be attributed to it. From upholding justice and promoting social change to shaping economies and fostering peace, politics has the power to bring about positive change and create a better world for all of us. Let us not forget the importance of politics and continue to strive for a more just and equitable society through our political involvement.
