Eastern Libya cancels planned visit by EU ministers

July 10, 2025
in Europe

Libya’s eastern-based putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar-led administration has recently caused quite a stir in the international community. On Tuesday, the administration ordered an EU commissioner and ministers from three member states to leave the country immediately, causing a diplomatic rift between Libya and the European Union.

The EU commissioner, Josep Borrell, and the ministers from Germany, Italy, and Malta were given 72 hours to leave the country after they met with the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, the internationally recognized government of Libya. The Haftar-led administration, which has been trying to seize control of the country since 2014, claims that the EU’s visit undermines their authority and is interference in Libya’s internal affairs.

This move by the Haftar-led administration has been met with strong criticism and condemnation from the European Union. Borrell called the decision “unacceptable” and a violation of international law. He also expressed concern for the safety of EU citizens in Libya and stated that the EU would take necessary measures to ensure their safety.

The EU’s visit to Libya was aimed at discussing ways to end the ongoing conflict in the country and reach a political solution. The EU has been actively involved in trying to bring peace to Libya and has been supporting the UN-led efforts to find a political solution to the crisis. The visit by the EU officials was a step towards showing their commitment to the process and finding a peaceful resolution.

However, the Haftar-led administration’s decision to expel the EU officials has caused a setback in these efforts. This move not only undermines the EU’s efforts but also shows a lack of commitment towards finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. It also raises questions about the Haftar-led administration’s intentions and willingness to work towards peace.

The EU’s visit and their efforts to find a political solution to the conflict have been widely appreciated by the international community. They have been working closely with the UN and other international organizations to bring an end to the suffering of the Libyan people. The EU has also been providing humanitarian aid to the country, which has been facing a humanitarian crisis due to the conflict.

The EU has been a strong supporter of the GNA, which is recognized by the UN and the international community as the legitimate government of Libya. The Haftar-led administration, on the other hand, has been labeled as a putschist group and has been accused of human rights violations and war crimes.

The EU and its member states have also been providing support to the GNA in their fight against the Haftar-led forces. The EU has imposed sanctions on individuals and entities who are obstructing the political process in Libya, including Haftar and his allies.

Therefore, the decision by the Haftar-led administration to expel EU officials is not only unjustified but also counterproductive. It not only undermines the EU’s efforts but also shows a disregard for international law and diplomacy. Expelling EU officials will not solve the ongoing conflict in Libya; instead, it will only escalate tensions and hinder the possibility of a political solution.

The EU has stated that it will not be intimidated by this decision and will continue to support the UN-led efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. This is a clear message to the Haftar-led administration that their actions will not be tolerated, and the EU will continue to work towards peace in Libya.

In conclusion, the decision by Libya’s eastern-based putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar-led administration to expel EU officials is not only unacceptable but also counterproductive. It hinders the efforts to find a political solution to the ongoing conflict in the country and shows a lack of commitment towards peace. The EU has been a strong supporter of the UN-led process and will continue to work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Libya. The international community must come together and condemn this move by the Haftar-led administration and call for an immediate end to the conflict in Libya.
